GREAT BLUEGRASS MUSIC is on tap this weekend in Cherokee with the annual N.C. State Bluegrass Festival at the Happy Holiday Campground. Headliners include Ricky Skaggs, Ralph Stanley, IIIrd Tyme Out, Jesse McReynolds, the Seldom Scene, Connie Smith and Marty Stuart. The event is from tonight (Thursday) through Saturday, June 17, with music from noon until 11 p.m. each day, rain or shine (tent provided), and attendees are advised to bring lawn chairs to enjoy the shows. Tickets are available at the gate; cost (adult) is $30 in advance or $35 at the gate each day or a three-day ticket for $75 in advance or $85 at the gate. Children under 6 are free with parents and children 6 to 13 are $15 per day or $40 for all three days. For information, call the campground at 497-7250.
SYLVA’S GARY CARDEN will be honored during a playwright’s reception at the Sandhills Performing Arts Center in Caldwell County on Friday, June 16. The occasion is one of a series of performances of his play, “Birdell,” which an actress named Bobbie Evans has been performing in Hudson and Lenoir. Originally scheduled as her “swan song” after 25 years of acting, Evans intended only a single performance. However, she has now agreed to a series of performances and has invited Gary to attend Friday’s reception and performance. The Sandhills Performing Arts Center is in Hudson, about 8 miles from Lenoir.
THE MUSIC VILLAGE in Cullowhee is now accepting a limited number of Suzuki flute students ages 4 to adult. The Suzuki teaching method, which makes learning fun, is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. SHARON WYATT of Savannah community is the new activities director at Grandview Manor Care Center in Franklin. She has 12 years experience and received her activities coordinator certification through Southwestern Community College. Wyatt is the daughter of Ray and Colene Ogle of Bryson City. She and her husband Alan attend New Savannah Baptist Church and have three sons and a daughter.
LOVE’S CHAPEL METHODIST CHURCH will hold its annual fish fry Saturday, June 24, fro 3 until 7 p.m. The meal will include fish or chicken, hush puppies, french fries, baked beans, coleslaw, dessert and drink for a cost of $7 per plate.
