Gladys Zaccardi
Gladys A. Zaccardi, 83, of Sylva, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006.
Private services will be held at a later date.
She was a daughter of the late Albert and Miriam McDonough Lueddeke.
She was also preceded in death by her husband; five brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are two sons, Robert R. Zaccardi of North Carolina and Michael A. Zaccardi of West Long Branch, N.J.; one sister, Doris Lueddeke Scheinhorn of Newark, N.J.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Jimmy Ward
James R. “Jimmy” Ward, 61, of Sylva, died Friday, June 9, 2006.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
He was a son of the late Eulan C. Ward and Bertie Mae Franklin Ward.
Surviving are one brother, Wayne Ward of Sylva; and two sisters, Kay Ann Ward Tolley of Sylva and Wanda Ward of Whittier.

Lenoir Stack
Lenoir Nicholson Stack, 94, of Sylva, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Christy officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She retired from Jackson County Public Schools, where she taught for 42 years with most of her tenure at Scotts Creek Elementary School. She was a member of Sylva First United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star East LaPorte Chapter 206, where she had served as Worthy Matron and recently received her 50-year membership pin. She enjoyed reading and quilting. She was a daughter of the late George Thomas Nicholson and Parthena Page Nicholson.
Surviving is one son, George Thomas “Tommy” Stack of Spruce Pine.

Christopher Brown
Christopher Stephen Brown, 24, of Cherokee’s Big Cove Community, died Sunday, June 11, 2006.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, June 15) at Straight Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Ray Ball and Ray Kinsland officiating. Burial will be in Swayney Family Cemetery.
Born in South Carolina, he had lived in Cherokee since 1993. He was the son of Andrea Denise Swayney and stepfather, Clyde Dull of Cherokee, and the late Ronald Eugene Brown.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Junior Franklin Brown.
Surviving in addition to his mother and stepfather are two sisters, Ashleysh Meghan Brown and Jessica Brooke Dull, both of the home; three half-sisters, Whitney Michelle Brown, Tiffany Ryan Brown, and Haley Elizabeth Brown, all of Fort Worth, Texas; maternal grandparents, John Wesley and Lynette Swayney of Cherokee; and paternal grandmother, Carolyn Hollins Brown of Lawndale.

Joe Frigo
Joe Frigo Jr., 73, of Old Homestead Hwy., Swanzey, N.H., died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at his home following a sudden illness.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, at First Congregational Church of Swanzey with the Rev. Pamela Cady Spain officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery with full military honors.
He was born in Lawtey, Fla., on July 21, 1932. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was stationed in France and Germany during the Korean War. He earned an associate’s degree in law enforcement from Jacksonville (Fla.) Community College and served as a deputy with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department for 24 years. He moved to Jackson County where he worked for 16 years in security at Western Carolina University and later worked for five years as a police officer in Sylva, retiring in Dec. 2003. He was a member of the Shriners of Florida and the Masons in North Carolina. He moved to Swanzey in 2003 and was a member of the West Swanzey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2616, American Legion Gordon Bissell Keene Post 4 and the Swanzey Experimental Aircraft Association. He was a son of the late Nettie Griffis and Joe Frigo Sr.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Mary A. Frigo; three sons, Michael Frigo of Macclenny, Fla., Robert A. Frigo of Jacksonville and Theodore G. Frigo of Puerto Rico and Charlotte; one brother, Emory Frigo of Jacksonville; one sister, Linda McDaris of St. Augustine, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Wayne Hage
Wayne Hage, 69, of Monitor Valley, Nev., died Monday, June 5, 2006, at his home.
Services were held at noon Saturday, June 10, at his home.
Born December 21, 1936, in Elko, Nev., he left home at age 15 to work for several open range livestock companies in Nevada and southern Idaho. He continued to run mustangs on the Owyhee Desert for his uncle and broke teams on buck rakes and mowing machines. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Strategic Air Command. He finished his GED and earned a master’s degree in biological science from the University of Nevada at Reno.
He served as chairman of the Agricultural Land Use Commission of the California State Chamber of Commerce, and was actively involved in the California Cattlemen’s Association and the California Farm Bureau. After purchasing his own ranch, Pine Creek Ranch, he wrote the book “Storm Over Rangelands: Private Rights in Federal Lands.”
He was involved in starting several property rights organizations including the National Federal Lands Conference, Stewards of the Range and the Nevada Live Stock Association. He also served on the executive board of Mountain States Legal Foundation, as a trustee of the University of Nevada Foundation, and Nevada Agricultural Foundation, and acted as a consultant to financial institutions. He was the youngest of five children of Reinert and Grace Hage.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Jean Nichols Hage, who died in 1996.
Surviving are his second wife, Helen Chenoweth Hage; four daughters, Ramona Morrison, Ruthe Agee, Margaret Byfield and Laura Perkins; one son, Wayne Hage; one stepson, Mike Chenoweth; one stepdaughter, Meg Keenan; one brother, David Hage; two sisters, Faye Tewell and Alice Hage; and 10 grandchildren.
Shirley Arch
Shirley Rogers Arch, 86, of Cherokee’s Painttown community, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Tsali Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Cherokee Baptist Church with Ray Kinsland officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
A native of Cherokee County, she lived much of her life in Jackson County. She was a retired cook, having worked at the Trailways bus station. She was a daughter of the late Oscar and Edna Warren Rogers.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Arch; one daughter, Frances Smith; two sons, James Edward and William Ross Arch; two brothers, Charles and Clarance Rogers; and an infant sister.
Surviving are two daughters, Marie Rose and Donna Jeanie Arch, both of Cherokee; three sons, Robert Michael Arch, Charles Gilbert Arch and Roger Lynn Arch, all of Cherokee; three sisters, Elsie R. Kimsey of Whittier, and Ruth Garrett and Lois Patterson, both of Cherokee; one brother, Harold Rogers of Georgia; 28 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Justin Elliott
Justin Lane Elliott, 10, of Waynesville, died Monday, June 12, 2006, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday, June 15) at Webster Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Dellinger and David Powell officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was a native of Conyers, Ga., and a former resident of Jackson County. He was the March of Dimes Ambassador Child for Jackson County from 1999-2003. He was the son of Joel Larry Elliott of Conyers and Lisa Smith Elliott of Waynesville.
Surviving in addition to his parents are one sister, Lilly Grace Elliott of Waynesville; maternal grandparents, Cheryl Melhorn of Pinehurst and Joe A. Smith of Sylva; two great-grandmothers, Louise K. William of Waynesboro, Va., and Paula Y. Smith of High Point.

Buddy Bryson
Henry Franklin “Buddy” Bryson, 73, of Nokomis, Fla., died Monday, June 5, 2006.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 16, in Hamburg Baptist Church Cemetery with Henry Bryson Jr. officiating.
He and his wife moved to Florida from North Carolina in 1956. He was a masonry contractor and had been retired for several years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in the Pines.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Annie Lois Houston Bryson, who died one week before him.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherri Smith of North Port, Fla., and Melissa Whitaker of Cleveland, Ga.; two sons, Roger Bryson and Chris Bryson, both of Nokomis; four brothers, Eldon Bryson of Radford, Va., Henry Bryson Jr. of Newport News, Va., Dennis Bryson of Asheville and Bill Bryson of Enka; three sisters, Opal Stahl and Kaye Bryson Jennings, both of Glenville, and Myra Smith of Maggie Valley; and two grandchildren.
