IT’S BY NATURE GALLERY is planning a July exhibit of images by Sylva Herald photographer Nick Breedlove. Titled “Exploring Jackson County,” the show will include pictures from the newspaper’s upcoming “Across the Mountains” magazine. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, June 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the downtown Sylva gallery.

THE ANNUAL FIREWORKS DISPLAY sponsored by the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department in downtown Sylva will be on Tuesday, July 4. Due to limited space this year, vendors will be by invitation only from the Rec Department and Downtown Sylva Association. Vendors will not be allowed to set up without a proper permit from the town of Sylva or DSA. For more information, contact the Rec Department at 293-3053.

PICKING IN THE PARK, the second annual Bluegrass festival to benefit the Jackson County Community Foundation, will be Saturday, July 1, from 4 until 10 p.m. at the Jackson County Recreation Complex in Cullowhee. Sponsored by the Foundation and the Recreation Department, the lineup includes seven bands, and WRGC will do a live broadcast. In addition, there will be food vendors and crafts demonstrations by members of Dogwood Crafters.

SKYLAND CARE CENTER will hold a yard and bake sale Saturday, June 10, from 8 a.m. until noon to raise money for bingo and other summer activities for its residents.

LOVE’S CHAPEL United Methodist Church will also have a yard sale Saturday, June 10, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Shoppers are urged to arrive early for the best selection.

DAVID AND LISA JOHNSON sent a note to say how much they appreciate smoke-free restaurants and congratulating Pizza Hut on that business’s choice to be smoke free. “We went to Pizza Hut for lunch, and they have signs up that say ‘no smoking in the building,’” the Johnsons wrote. “It would be great if all restaurants and public buildings would follow Pizza Hut’s example and be smoke free.”

SEVERAL LOCAL DANCERS will participate in an appreciation performance for the Highlands community this Saturday, June 10, at the Martin-Lipscomb Performing Arts Center on Chestnut Street in Highlands. Performances are at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and local dancers from the Ian Yeoman’s Experience include Katie Beth Morris, Laurel Walker, Elaine Adams and Stephanie Phipps.
