Then and now

Though it’s not exactly the same angle as an earlier shot of the Tuckaseigee taken around 1909 (top), the recent lower photo does show today’s different appearance of the river above the Dillsboro Dam, which was built by early industrialist C.J. Harris around 1913. The building on the right closest to the river (top photo) is believed to be an old ice plant and is thought to have been located approximately where Dillsboro’s town park is now. The bridge that’s visible in the top photo was just above the confluence of Scotts Creek and the Tuckaseigee, which means it was downstream of the present highway bridge. This area of the river has been in the news for the past several years due to a proposal by Duke Energy, which owns the dam and power plant that once supplied electricity for Harris’ Dillsboro and Sylva Electric Co., that would remove the 93-year-old dam as part of a mitigation package for new licenses it is seeking from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for hydroelectric projects in Jackson County. Federal regulators are scheduled to be in Sylva tonight (Thursday) for a 6 p.m. hearing on a recent draft environmental assessment that would allow the removal of the dam.
