Street’s new look to yield cleaner water

060806constructionmillstree
Concrete workers fill in the new “rain garden” near the intersection of Mill and Spring streets last Friday (June 2) as part of a Mill Street renovation project. Set to end this week, the construction also included new sidewalks, curbs and guttering aimed at making the thoroughfare that parallels Main Street more attractive, said Sylva Manager Jay Denton, who added that the effort is paying off. “Already we have store owners who are making improvements to their buildings,” he said. Denton was also excited about the garden, which utilizes special soil to filter rain water to remove impurities before it runs into Scotts Creek. “It’s the first one for Sylva, but it won’t be the last,” Denton said. Landscapers filled the garden with plants earlier this week. – Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
