Melita Bryson
Melita Fox Bryson, 84, of Painter Street, Sylva, died Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Ned Pressley, Herman Toney and Clark Sheffield officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Paul Wooten, Doyle Cogdill, Carl Crowe, Bill Lynch, Ray Conner and James Sheffield.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed gardening, canning and baking cakes. She was a member of the Church of God for more than 70 years and was currently a member of Whittier Church of God. She was a daughter of the late Raymond and Bessie Jamison Fox.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Raymond Lee Bryson; two sisters, Ethel Jones and Mary Fox; four brothers, Ernest, Elbert, Raymond Jr. and Richard Fox.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Robert Bryson; and one sister, Annie Pope of Sylva.
Liller Howell
Liller Jo Howell, 70, of Arnold Hill, Sylva, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Liberty Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Charles Lee and Wanda Moore officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Tommy Allen, Earl Allen, Charles Allen, Mike Bryson, Sherman Fowler and Gary Bryson.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County. She retired from Western Carolina University’s food service and enjoyed cooking. She was a daughter of the late Harvey and Hester Bryson Howell.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Johnny Howell, Tommy Bryson and Leon Bryson; one sister, Annie Ruth Shepherd; and one granddaughter.
Surviving are one daughter, Janice H. Williams of Roseboro; four sons, James P. Howell, Samuel Lee Howell, Ronald Howell and Donald Howell, all of Sylva; two brothers, Glenn Bryson of Sylva and Larry Howell of LaFayette, Ga.; and one grandson.
Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Willa Mae Ensley
Willa Mae Painter Ensley, 88, of Apollo Drive, Sylva, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at Skyland Care Center after a period of declining health.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, June 8), in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Mike Farmer and Earl Holden officiating. Burial will be in Lovedale Cemetery.
The family was scheduled to receive friends Wednesday, June 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Ensley, Harold Ensley, Toby Painter, L.G. Painter, Caroll Ensley, Travis Painter, Todd Ensley, Scott Ensley, Ty Jones, Charlie Bryson and Robert Bryson.
She was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and co-owned Ensley Electric Co. for 30 years with her husband. She retired from Contel Telephone Company’s repair department and was a member of Lovedale Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cross stitching, traveling, crossword puzzles and baseball.
She preceded in death by her husband, Harry Dee Ensley, who died in 1995; one brother, Grady Painter; and two sisters, Thomasine Painter Wells and Mildred Painter Bryson.
Surviving are one daughter, Linda Ensley Queen of Sylva; one son, Dee Allen Ensley of Sylva; one sister, Geneva Painter Ensley of Sylva; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Emmett Price
Emmett Friend Price, 74, of Horsham, Penn., died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Penn.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Rev. Harry Vance officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
He was a native of Columbus, Ohio. He was a lieutenant colonel, serving in the U.S. Army as an airborne infantry officer from 1951 to 1972. He had tours of duty in Korea, Germany and Vietnam, earning the airborne and combat infantry badges, the Air Medal and a Bronze Star. After the service he worked as a manager for Pace Systems Inc. of Horsham, working on systems engineering contracts for the U.S. Navy from 1972 to 1978.
He served as chief clerk at Voters Services of Montgomery County (Penn.) from 1989 to 1993. He was a member of the Horsham Township Planning Commission and was a former president and chairman of the Horsham Township Council.
He was a Cub master and Scout master for the Boy Scouts of America, was a member of the Order of the Arrow and was active as an assistant manager and umpire for the Horsham Little League. He was president of the Hatboro-Horsham Senior High School PTA and was a member of the Hatters for Music High School Band Boosters. He was a master mason of the Lawrence Lodge 708 of Free and Accepted Masons, the Presque Isle Lodge of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and the Zem Zem Shrine of the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine, all of Erie, Penn. He was a son of the late Darrell R. Price and Estella Schaffer Price.
Surviving are his wife, Darleene Cable Price; two sons, Emmett F. Price Jr. and Edward Price; one daughter, Vicki Isabella; one brother, Tom Price; three sisters, Carol Hangen, Noni Oliver and Judy Bridges; and five grandchildren.
Pere Wickes
Pere L. Wickes, 87, of Sylva, died Friday, June 2, at Skyland Care Center following a period of declining health.

Ruby Parris
Ruby Hazel Clayton Parris, 91, of Sylva, died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. H.C. Couch and Tommy James officiating. Burial was in Addie Cemetery.
She was a native of Jackson County and lived most of her adult life on Buff Creek. She was a resident of Pickens, S.C., until she moved to Mountain Trace nine years ago. She was a daughter of the late Robert and Lula Clayton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Vinson Parris.
Surviving are two daughters, Charlene Parris Marshbanks of Seneca, S.C., and Fern Parris Hensley of Sylva; three sons, Terrell Parris, Calvin Parris and Dwight Parris, all of Pickens; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mildred Venn
Mildred Reed Venn of Balsam died Wednesday, May 31, at Autumn Care in Waynesville following a period of declining health.
Services will be held at a later date.

Abijah B. Hancock, 87, of Franklin, died Friday, June 2, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Robert Waters
Robert Lewis Waters Sr., 80, of Asheville, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at the VA Hospital in Oteen.
Services were held at noon Thursday, June 8, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Dr. James C. Waters and Mike Moore officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by the U.S. Marines and William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers were his nephews.
He was born July 10, 1925, in Sylva. He served as an officer in the Merchant Marines and in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He graduated from Cullowhee High School in 1942, attended Western Carolina University and graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy. He retired from Slosman Corp. after 23 years of service and was a foreman at Dayco Southern for many years. He enjoyed painting, woodworking, reading, jewelry making, ceramics and fishing. He was a son of the late T.D.L. Water and Fannie Kephart Waters.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Evelyn Moss Waters, who died Oct. 26, 1985; and one brother, Harold L. Waters Sr. of Statesville.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Thelmalene Parker Waters; one daughter, Audrey Waters of Canton; three sons, Robert L. Waters II of Statesville, Daniel V. Waters of Candler and Michael H. Waters of Mills River; one stepdaughter, Nancy Williams of Sylva; four brothers, Charles E. Waters of Hudson, Roy Allen Waters of Cummings, Ga., James C. Waters of Lenoir and Dewey D. Waters of Statesville; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
