WestCare’s new technology

To the Editor:

During this past weekend WestCare Health System successfully installed a new state-of-the-art hospital information system. This weekend was the culmination of more than two years of work and thousands of hours of planning and preparation.

I want the community, to know how proud I am of the entire WestCare Team that has participated in this project thus far.

WestCare professionals from a variety of disciplines have worked diligently to design and implement this Information System. Their ability to plan and coordinate across functional areas will ensure our goals are met. The goals for this information system include the implementation of enhanced patient safety and patient care features as we continue to pursue perfection in caring for your family and your neighbors; provide your physician’s clinical information in a format to assist with assessment, diagnosis and treatment in a timely manner; create an integrated efficient workflow for staff resulting in greater staff satisfaction, which directly impacts patient satisfaction.

Members of the community should also be proud of the many WestCare staff members who have performed at a superior level on this project. Our entire IT staff, our trainers, our system designers, our nursing staff, ancillary staff, and business and support staff excelled during many hours of detailed rigorous work.

The foundation for this new system was successfully laid this past weekend. We will deploy additional features and modules during the coming weeks as our staff become accustomed to the significant change this system represents. These tools will allow us to pursue perfection as we continue to deliver excellence in health care to Western North Carolina.

Courthouse flag

To the Editor:

While in town Sunday evening, I noted that the illumination for the Courthouse flag was not working.

I contacted Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan, and, although the lights could not be fixed on Monday, he directed the flag be removed before nightfall as flag display protocol dictates.

I appreciate his quick action in respect to our national flag, and I’m sure other military veterans in Jackson County do too.

Support Congressional debate on Iraq war

To the Editor:

Wednesday, June 7, has been designated a national call-in day to demand that Congress host an open floor debate on all aspects of the Iraq War.

So far, 122 members of the House of Representatives have signed a “discharge petition” calling for immediate debate and consideration of all alternatives to the policy of open-ended occupation of Iraq. Ninety-six more members are needed to sign the petition for debate to begin.

You can help by calling Representative Charles Taylor on June 7. Ask him to sign H.R. 543 and ask him to ask a colleague to sign the resolution.

Call (202) 224-3121, 1-888-355-3588, or 1-800-828-0498 and give the operator Taylor’s name to be connected to the appropriate Washington office. Taylor can also be reached through his Sylva office at 586-6100.

This national call-in day is sponsored by www.afterdowningstreet.org, a coalition of more than 200 organizations. At no time has it been more necessary for our representatives to debate the Iraq War and to fully represent the truth related to all aspects of the War. Please call and support House Resolution 543.

Cat shelter invites visitors

To the Editor:

When the stresses of a world in turmoil or merely a bad day at work threaten to overwhelm us, help is a cat-in-the-lap away.

Feline therapy eases anxiety by lowering blood pressure and releasing “feel good” endorphins. At this time of year, when our animal shelters are overflowing with cats and kittens, there has never been a better time to adopt a feline therapist and let a cat heal your heart.

Catman2 joins the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Petfinder.com in declaring June “Adopt-a-Shelter Cat” month. The Catman2 shelter in Cullowhee is inviting people to stop by to meet available “feline therapists.”

As an added bonus, you can double your chances to win the handmade quilt we will raffle in July. Just by taking a tour and looking us over we will sell you two chances for $1 or 12 for $5. This is half the price of tickets sold anywhere else. The offer is good for first-time visitors, and there is a limit of 12 tickets.

We want people to see who we are. Call 293-0892 and make an appointment to visit, or visit our Web site at www.catman2.org.
