High schools schedule commencements

Three local high schools have 182 candidates for graduation during commencement exercises scheduled this week.
School principals, Superintendent Sue Nations and Assistant Superintendent Steve Jones will award diplomas to graduates, and three teachers will give commencement addresses.
Seniors will walk the stage in Western Carolina university’s Hoey Auditorium for the School of Alternatives’ ceremony at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday). Blue Ridge School graduates will toss their caps in the school’s gymnasium during a 7 p.m. event also set for today. Finally, strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” will fill Western’s Ramsey Center during Smoky Mountain High School’s 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, commencement.
Smoky Mountain
English teacher Inga Sutton will deliver the commencement address at the SMHS ceremony. Sutton will be introduced by senior class Vice President and Homecoming Queen Sky Kanott.
Victoria Palmer will give the salutatory address, followed by Jordan Youmans’ valedictory address. Senior class President Shannon Murphy will speak and student body President Katie Beth Morris will present the senior gift. Senior class photographer Ashley Derks will give a slide show.
Diplomas will be awarded by Principal Alex Bell and Superintendent Sue Nations.

The commencement address will be given by social studies teacher Lana Bryson.
Student speakers include Kendra Bumgarner, Student Government Association president, Valedictorian Kayla Bott and Salutatorian Marlene Morales.
Staff member Audrey Rice will sing the national anthem and will be joined by Lisa Hoxit for other music.
Principal Carol Rector will present a charge to the graduates. Rector, Assistant Principal Gary Safrit and Nations will award diplomas.

Nine seniors will be awarded degrees in commencement ceremonies at the School of Alternatives.
Ruth Hudson will give the valedictory address. English teacher Bill Hudson will be the commencement speaker.
Steve Jones will award diplomas and Principal Jay Grissom will declare the students graduates.
The school’s graduation candidates are Jessica Elaine Bryson, Brandon Keith Buchanan, Aaron David Coggins, Ernest “J.R.” Collins, Lynnette Arlene Cross, Daniel Glenn Griffin, Ruth Hardie Hudson, William Isaac Moss and Matthew Allen Watson.
