IT’S GRAND OPENING TIME at the new shopping center behind Zaxby’s. Join all the new businesses – HannaCole’s, Zaxby’s, Phoumala T. DON’T FORGET this Saturday’s benefit barbecue dinner and music jam at Sylva First Presbyterian Church. The event begins at 6 p.m. and all proceeds will benefit a planned youth mission trip to the Yucatan Penisula. Music will be provided by a jazz guitar duo, Michael Collings and Jeff Savage.

JACKSON COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY has opened a resale store in Glenville. The “Re-Store” is the next step of a continued effort by Habitat to strengthen its ability to serve Jackson County. A variety of household items, including large appliances and household fixtures, can be found at the store, which is located on N.C. 107 next to the Glenville Country Store. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday, noon untitl 5:30 p.m. Call 743-9634 for more information.


KUDZU PLAYERS will present “Ruthless!” Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 16, 17 and 18. The musical asks the question, “How far will 8-year-old Tina Denmark go to get the lead in the school play?” The play stars Sarah Larcher as Tina Denmark and will be performed at the old Courthouse. Show times are 7:30 p.m. nightly with a special Father’s Day performance Sunday at 3 p.m. as well. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Call the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce at 586-2155 for reservations.


BICYCLE BASICS 101 FOR ADULTS, a series of riding lessons taught by professionals, will begin Thursday, June 1, at 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Center in Cullowhee. The course will cover bicycle safety, how and when to change gears, and many basic questions. The goal of the class is to get riders comfortable on their bikes and to have fun along the way. TRIPLE-THREAT PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY (formerly the Dance Centre) in Sylva is holding registrations for summer classes this week. The academy will be open Wednesday, May 31, through Friday, June 2, from 3 until 6 p.m. Triple-Threat will offer classes in ballet, tap, and jazz for children age 3 and up and is also offering several summer camps including a “Fairy Tale Camp” for young students, a cheerleading camp, and a musical theater camp. “UNTO THESE HILLS” has a new look and new script for the upcoming season, and the half-century-old outdoor drama is inviting tribal members and business owners to be their guests at two pre-opening performances. All members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee are invited to be special guests at the premiere of “Unto These Hills ... a Retelling,” on Tuesday, June 6, at 8:30 p.m. at Mountainside Theater. Those attending are asked to bring tribal enrollment cards to insure entry. Local business owners are invited to be special guests on Wednesday, June 7, 8:30 p.m. Those planning to attend are asked to R.S.V.P. to Linda West at 497-2111 for entry information and all other information.
