Then and now
Sylva’s Police Department is now housed in the original home of the Sylva Fire Department, which was founded in 1899 by A.J. Dills. Early firefighers (top photo) included, from left, Charlie Price, A.J. Dills, Gordon Dillard, Roscoe Dills, Dick Wilson, (unkown first name) Eckenrod, Felix Picklesimer, Paul Womack, David Dills, Theodore Mashburn, E.O. Mashburn and D.M. Tallent. The building was built in 1927 by Mike Brown and initially served as both firehouse and city hall. The department’s second fire station, completed next door in 1960, was the first separate fire building for Sylva and was built by Southern Lumber Co.; the firefighters themselves finished the interior. That building was remodeled for Sylva’s town hall after the fire department moved into its present quarters in 1980. – Photo from the late Willa Mae Scroggs (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove. |
