Powerball sales begin
Charlyn Clayton, left, and Tanya Calhoun, of the Mountain Breeze Mart across from Jackson Paper, review rules governing the sale of Powerball tickets Tuesday morning (May 30), the first day the tickets were sold in North Carolina. Local convenience stores were among some 5,000 retailers participating in Powerball sales across the state. The drawing for the week’s $38 million jackpot was scheduled for Wednesday night and results were not available as of press time. Several local merchants encountered problems restarting their lottery computer systems after a widespread power outage shut them down early Wednesday morning. The machine at Mountain Breeze was running by 8:45 a.m., Calhoun said. “We had a few people ask for them before we got our computer running,” Calhoun said. “We haven’t had many in yet today, but I expect we’ll have more this afternoon and tomorrow as the drawing gets closer.” – Herald photo by Derek Hodges |
