Honoring Jackson County veterans
Retired Army Lt. Col Hugh Moon, above, spoke at a Courthouse Memorial Day ceremony this past Monday (May 29). During the event, Commissioners’ Chairman Brian McMahan presented a wreath to Bill Collins, right in photo below, who is a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that triggered the United States’ entrance into World War II; and veterans Clyde Bumgarner, left in bottom photo and Sylva Town Board Member Harold Hensley folded the flag at the ceremony’s close.
In his remarks, Moon said it was an honor to be part of a ceremony that marked local veterans’ many sacrifices for their country.
“When I think of veterans, I think of sacrifice,” Moon said. “Not only those who died but also those who gave their time away from their jobs and, more importantly, from their families.
