‘Books for Bricks’ is great idea
Supporters of the new Jackson County Library have hit upon a winning strategy: Let the books children read help pay for the “bricks” that will build a library.
Through this plan, those who are inclined to contribute to a library building fund can see their donation do double duty. Not only are they helping turn a dream into reality, they are actively investing in a child’s future. Spending a summer reading books for a good cause will not only teach county children about literature, but also will help them feel connected to both the present and future libraries.
We hope all parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors will get behind the plan and sponsor the children who are willing to read.
Powerball should spur lottery sales
State officials are betting that this week’s Powerball premiere will boost sagging lottery ticket sales and raise the revenue from the games to the levels projected earlier this year.
Though sales of scratch-off tickets were brisk in March, they have tapered off in the months since, and total sales have fallen short of pre-lottery predictions.
Powerball’s big payoffs – the drawing slated for Wednesday night, which was the first Tar Heel ticket purchasers could join, was valued at $38 million – have traditionally reeled in more buyers.
With regard to the lottery, we’re on the side of Tar Heel money staying in the Old North State to help educate North Carolina’s children.
Carolina’s calling
Not since the Streater brothers in the 1970s has a Jackson County high school produced an athlete who’s attracted the amount of attention from big-name college programs as has Smoky Moutain’s junior guard Cetera DeGraffenreid.
The suspense is over, and Cetera has decided on a collegiate career at North Carolina where she can follow the Tar Heel footsteps of legends like Michael Jordan and current stars like Ivory Latta.
Cetera seems certain of her choice, and we’re thrilled that we’ll be able to watch her at Carolina after her standout performances at SMHS come to a close.
In her mind, she’s going to Carolina; to our way of thinking, nothing could be finer.
