Coach Galloway announces dates for football workouts
Dale Galloway, Smoky Mountain’s new football coach, has announced the Mustangs’ summer workout schedule.
They will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June starting the 13th. The July schedule is 10-13, 17-18 and 24-27. Workouts will typically run from 5:30-8 p.m.
Make-up workouts are planned for 8 a.m. June 16 and July 28.
Players are expected to attend 13 of the 16 regular workouts, according to Galloway. Those making less than 13 must do make-up work at the beginning of the season to be eligible for scrimmages or games, he said.
Any days missed after the July 31 opening of practice due to the lack of a physical must be made up with extra workouts.
Players owing workouts will select from the “Grab Bag of Fate” to determine what their extra work will be, the coach said.
Those attending a football camp on the day of a workout will not have to make up the session.
Workouts will consist of weight lifting, conditioning and skill development. Each workout will have a defensive or offensive focus. The first will be defense June 13 and will alternate thereafter.
The July 27 workout will be from 4:30-6 p.m. It will be followed by a 7 p.m. cookout for players and parents. Players making all 16 workouts will be fed steak. Others will have hotdogs or hamburgers.
“As we prepare for the upcoming season, we cannot feel that some progress is acceptable,” Galloway said. “Progress should be our minimum expectation. We want to field a competitive football team that carries itself with pride and enthusiasm. We want the players to be leaders in the classroom and on the field. We want respect for the Mustang football program in Western North Carolina and beyond. Coaches, players and parents have to be willing to pay the price for earning that respect.”
Galloway, who came here from Ashe County, is seeking to turn around a program that has been 1-10 each of the past two seasons.
The Mustangs are slated to take part in a jamboree at Western Carolina on Aug. 12.
They will open the season either Aug. 17 or 18 at WCU against Hendersonville. The first home game will be Aug. 25 against Swain.
