Melvin Barnes and Mike Caldwell first spent several days removing the old lettering and repairing and repainting the front of the building, and then they installed the new letters. Service to honor veterans to be Monday - County officials are planning a Memorial Day ceremony at noon Monday, May 29, at the bottom of the steps in front of the old County Courthouse. Tobacco-free schools on hold until draft policy is fine-tuned - Though local school officials emphasized that they plan to outlaw tobacco on school property, that move will have to wait at least a month. At the suggestion of board attorney Paul Holt, school board members Monday (May 20) voted during their regular meeting to table a policy that would make school campuses completely tobacco-free – even during football....


Herald to close for holiday; Early deadlines announced - The Sylva Herald offices and printing plant will be closed on Monday, May 29, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Sylva restaurants begin sales of mixed drinks - Mixed-drink sales are under way in Sylva after the May 2 vote that legalized such beverage sales within the city limits. In the month since the election, six restaurants have received permits and are offering mixed alcohol drinks to their customers, said Sylva Planning Director Jim Aust. The restaurants that are currently offering mixed drinks are Karen’s, the Rusty Lizard, El Pacifico, Main Street Bar and Grill, O’Malley’s and Colima, Aust....
