R.O. AND WILLETTA VANCE of Vance Hardware celebrated their 43rd anniversary last week. They opened their Main Street store on May 16, 1963. In addition to the hardware inventory, Vance was a Hot Point appliance dealer until the early 1980s when he gave up his dealership and went into appliance service full time. Vance has been associated with downtown business for 58 years, he said; he worked 15 years at Western Auto before opening his own store. “I’ve seen a lot of changes on Main Street and a lot of stores come and go,” he said. Vance now has the only hardware store in the downtown business district, but he can remember when there were three others – Western Auto, Sylva Coal and Lumber Co. and Hooper Builders Supply.

LINDA MORRIS OF WEBSTER sent us an e-mail to share some additional information about last week’s “Then and Now” photo of the old Commercial Hotel. The hotel was originally owned and operated by Manus Hanley Morris and his wife, Mary Jane Long Morris, Linda wrote, and the people on the porch in the picture are Manus Morris, Mary Jane Morris, and (probably) Dr. Daisy McGuire. The original picture is in the office of Main Street’s Sylva Insurance Agency, which was founded by John Morris (son of Manley and Mary Jane Morris) in 1926 and currently owned by John Morris Jr. and Phyllis Foxx.
