Service to honor veterans to be Monday

County officials are planning a Memorial Day ceremony at noon Monday, May 29, at the bottom of the steps in front of the old County Courthouse.

Guest speaker will be retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Hugh Moon and members of the Smoky Mountain High School chorus will sing.

Bill Collins, a Jackson County resident who survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, will place a wreath in memorial to the county’s veterans. American Legion Post 104 will conduct a flag ceremony and Rebecca Heppel, who works in Rep. Charles Taylor’s Sylva office, will present a flag to be flown in front of the old Courthouse.

All veterans will be honored. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the old Courthouse.

For more information, contact Russ Bauer, Jackson County veterans officer, at 631-2294.
