East Tennessee blasts WCU in baseball game

Bubba Herbold went five of five with five RBIs leading East Tennessee to a 16-8 non-conference baseball victory on May 16 at ETSU’s Cardinal Park.

Chuck Hargis and Blake Church also had big days for the Buccaneers by going four of six and three of four, respectively. Stephen Douglas, Shane Byrne, C.J. Lee , Matt Traylor and Michael Courtney all added two hits.

RBI singles by Steven Strausbaugh and Trey McDaniel gave the Catamounts a 2-0 lead in the first.

The Bucs tied it on Byrne’s run-scoring single in the first and an RBI triple by Hargis in the second.

ETSU took control with six runs in the third to lead 8-2. Lee and Ben Allen had RBI singles, and Douglas had an RBI double. Hargis drove in a run with a ground out, and two runs scored on errors.

The Bucs extended the margin to 12-2 with four runs in the fourth. Herbold had a two-run single while Courtney and Hargis both had RBI singles.

Each team picked up a run in the sixth leaving the score 3-3. Jonathan Greene homered for the Cats, and Allen delivered a sacrifice fly for ETSU.

Scott Ward had a solo homer in the WCU seventh, but the Bucs responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 16-4. Herbold’s base hit drove in a pair, and Anthony Russell had an RBI single.

Ward had a two-run single in the eighth, and Tim Hallam hit a two-run homer for Western in the ninth.

Greene led the Cats with three hits. Hallam, McDaniel and Ward all had two.

ETSU starter Tony Sheffield was credited with the win.

WCU reliever Mike Buda (0-1) took the loss.
