Brotherton finishes second at state meet
Smoky Mountain senior Travis Brotherton finished second in the 3,200-meter run Saturday at Irwin Belk Track on the N.C. A&T campus in Greensboro.
Brotherton’s time was 9:50.07.
Brad Popple of East Lincoln won the event in 9:45.70.
“Travis led until the last two laps,” Coach Jamie Extine said. “(Popple) just made a big surge. He kept looking back for Travis.”
Brotherton’s time was his best of the season, according to Extine.
“He went after it and performed very well,” the coach said. “(Popple) came out of nowhere and had the best time he’s ever run. It’s not bad to be a state runner-up. I’m very proud of Travis. He had a great career.”
C.J. Fortner finished 11th in the high jump at 5-10.
“I’m very proud of C.J.,” Extine said. “It’s unusual for a sophomore to qualify for state, especially one in his first year of track. He’s going to have plenty of opportunities in the future.”
Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs was Victoria Palmer, who finished fifth in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:27.48 set a school record.
Tina McDonald was 11th in the triple jump (31-6) and 13th in the long jump (14-6).
“I’m very proud of them,” Coach Dale Galloway said. “They did an excellent job. When you get to the state meet, everybody is going to be good.”
