Then and now
The Commercial Hotel (top photo), described in “The History of Jackson County” as a “new, two-story, up-to-date building,” burned to the ground on April 6, 1923. Owned by the Hastings Family, it was located on the corner of Main and Spring streets on the site of the present First Citizens Bank parking lot (lower photo). The fire, which was visible as far away as Maple Springs community, also destroyed Medford Furniture Co., Zachary’s Barber Shop and a nearby home. The fire’s intense heat broke out plate-glass windows on the opposite side of Main Street. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove. |
