The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Agnes Cloer

051806agnescloerAgnes Hastings “Granny” Cloer, 81, of Ferguson Road, Sylva, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in Old Field Cemetery.

Pallbearers were James Ensley, Brian Hall, Steven Broom, Jason Tyler, Alan Battles and Norman “Gooch” Walkingstick.

A native of Macon County, she had lived in Jackson County for the last 49 years. She had worked at Town House Motor Court as a housekeeper and was a member of the Jackson County C.B. Radio Club. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and collecting rocks and bottles. She was a daughter of the late Alec Hastings and Nellie Dills Hastings Bingian.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Albert Carl Cloer, who died in 1972; one brother, Howard Hastings; and her stepfather, Reid Bingian.

Surviving are five daughters, Shirley Brooks and Deborah Cloer, both of Whittier, Linda Broom of Sylva, Connie Tyler of Balsam, and Gail Cagle of Old Fort; two sons, Doug Battles of Franklin and Ronnie Cloer of Whittier; one sister, Orpha Mason of Franklin; two stepdaughters, Doris Wells and Sarah Hooper, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one stepson, Calvin Cloer of Concrete, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Leland Parton

Leland S. “Charlie Brown” Parton, 44, of Sylva’s Turtle Creek community, died unexpectedly, Sunday May 7, 2006, at his residence.

Graveside services were held Monday, May 8, in Cabe Family Cemetery.

A native of Cherokee, he was a son of Louise Cabe.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Gwen Hooper; one daughter, Courtney E. Parton of Cherokee; one brother, Lou Parton of Canton; and two sisters, Misty Cabe and Melonie Parton, both of Cherokee.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Linda Mattress

Linda Faye Austin Mattress, 55, of Allen Street, Sylva, died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 18) at Liberty Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Walter Bryson and Charles Lee officiating. Burial will be in Parris Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ellis Blazer, Robert Love, Warren Winchester, Herbert Conley, Benny Freeman and Roger Tate.

A native of Jackson County, she was a graduate of Sylva-Webster High School and Southwestern Community College, and had attended Western Carolina University and Georgia Tech. She was a hair dresser. She was a daughter of Evelyn Bryson Austin of Sylva and the late Gene Austin.

In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Larry Mattress, who died in 1982; one brother, Thomas Lyndon Austin; and one sister, Elizabeth Ann McDonald.

Surviving in addition to her mother are one daughter, Crystal Leann Webb of Franklin; two sisters, Joyce Stratton of Dallas, Texas, and Carolyn Love of Franklin; one brother, Keldon Eugene Austin of Sylva; and one grandchild.

James Lineberry

James Hastings Lineberry Jr., 63, of Ensley Street, Sylva, died Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at East Sylva Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Tommy James and Charles Stevens officiating. Entombment was in Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were East Sylva Baptist Church deacons.

A native of Maryland, he was a retired self-employed truck driver and an artist. He was a son of the late James Hastings Sr. and Jessie Harold Lineberry.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Paul Lineberry.

Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Geneva Greenarch Lineberry; one stepdaughter, Michele Sutton of Sylva; six stepsons, Rick Cogdill of Monroe, and Tab Cogdill, William Cogdill, Dick Cogdill, Darren Robinson and Todd Robinson, all of Sylva; two sisters, Wanda Pruitt of Trap Hill and Rosemary Lineberry of Booneville; two brothers, Tony Lineberry of Elkin and Gary Lineberry of Booneville; 15 stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Joe Panozzo

Joe J. Panozzo, 82, of Sylva and West Palm Beach, Fla., died Monday, May 8, 2006, in Florida.

Services were held Friday, May 12, in Florida. Burial will be held at a later date in Sylva.

He was born in Tresche Conce, Italy, and came to the United States in September 1929. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Holy Name Catholic Church in West Palm Beach. He was a pilot during World War II and a retired captain of the West Palm Beach Police Department. He owned and operated Laurel Bush Campground in Sylva for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy; his parents; and one sister.

Surviving are two sons, David of Florida and Jerry of Sylva; two brothers, Vic and Angelo Panozzo, both of Florida; three grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Ave., West Palm Beach, FL 33407.



Charles Potts

051806charlespottsCharles Weaver Potts, 67, of Belle Glade, Fla., formerly of Cashiers, died Thursday, May 11, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. John Rogers and Keith Ashe officiating. Burial was in Potts Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Roy Potts, Curly Potts, Robbie Potts, Smoky Buchanan, Eldon Jamison and Harley Evitt.

A native of Cashiers, he was a retired broker in agriculture. He was a son of the late William Nicklos Potts and Elsie Evitt Potts.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Stacy Obear Potts; and seven brothers, Bob, Marvin, Wade, Arthur, Gene, Don and Doyle.

Surviving are two sons, Nicky Potts of Franklin and Timothy Potts of Clewiston, Fla.; three daughters, Vicki Rhodes of Franklin, Lisa Rudd of Clewiston and Trisha Johns of Bonifay, Fla.; one brother, Davis Potts of Greenville, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Anna Taylor

Anna Lee Pressley Taylor, 89, of Nashville, Tenn., died Thursday, May 11, 2006, in Nashville.

Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at Forest Lawn Chapel with the Rev. Don Choate officiating. Burial was at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

She was born April 30, 1917, in Jackson County to the late Thadeus Alexander Pressley and Effie Etta Ashe.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Logan Henry Taylor and two brothers, Odell Pressley and T.A. Pressley.

Surviving are two sisters, Alice Pressley Taylor and Pearl Pressley Smith; one daughter, Barbara J. Wike of Franklin; four sons, Ernest Taylor, Michael Taylor and Ricky Taylor, all of Nashville, and Tommy Taylor of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.



Mary Wise

051806marywiseMary Panter Wise, 80, of Sylva, died Sunday, May 14, 2006, at Skyland Care Center.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 19, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. John Bunn officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

She was born in Ellijay, Ga., and had lived in Jackson County for the last six years. She graduated in 1943 from Forest Park (Ga.) High School and was valedictorian of her class. She was a 1947 graduate of the University of Georgia, receiving a degree in business administration. She was a homemaker and enjoyed writing poetry, painting, gardening and baking. She was a daughter of the late Robert Harmon and Nannie Daves Panter.

She was also preceded in death by one son, James Bunyan Wise III.

Surviving are one son, Jay Wise of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers, Willis Panter and James Panter of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
