Walks help Knights to rout Smoky Mountain

North Henderson took advantage of six walks in the first inning to score nine runs en route to a 14-3 Western Athletic Conference baseball victory on May 2 at North.

The Knights had twice as many runs as they had hits.

“There is no defense for walks,” Coach Ron Yount said. “We finished with eight walks and six errors. That’s 14 people on base without being contested.”

The game was called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.

The Mustangs struck first with three runs in the opening inning. D.J. Brooks walked, Grant Schallock singled and Daniel Buchanan had an RBI single. Clay Cantler walked to load the bases, and a walk to Levi Buchanan forced in a run. Jared Deitz drove in the third run with an infield out.

Seth Baldwin, Matt McMurray and Trey Nicholson all walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first. Josh Drake singled in a pair of runs, and Ken Brandt had a two-run double. Michael Lolley added a sacrifice fly, and another run scored on a wild pitch.

Another two-run double by Brandt made it 11-3 in the second.

North scored on errors in the third and fourth, and Baldwin had an RBI single in the fourth.

Brandt was two of two at the plate.

Michael Freeman was two of three for the Mustangs.

Baldwin was the winning pitcher.

Levi Buchanan (2-5) started on the mound for the Mustangs but left without retiring a batter.

Playing at home, the Mustang JVs lost to North 6-2. They allowed four unearned runs on six errors.

“We hit the ball extremely well in the first inning then it just fell off,” Coach Scott Manshack said.

The JVs bounced back the next day with a 9-5 home win over Franklin, Mitch Mincey was three of four with two doubles, and Sammy Matthews was two of three. Jared Jones had a triple.

“We put it all together,” Manshack said. “We only committed two errors.”
