Vendors can still sign up for June’s first-ever Patchwork Fabric Festival

On the heels of its successful Heritage Walk demonstrations that were part of last weekend’s Greening Up the Mountains in Sylva, Catch the Spirit of Appalachia is planning another mountain-themed festival to show off the region’s sewing and needlework traditions.

The group’s inaugural Patchwork Fabric Festival is slated for Saturday, June 3, at the Jackson County Recreation Center in Cullowhee. Artists will display their wares at 25 inside booths, and food vendors will set up in tents located outside the Rec Center. All participants will dress in period clothing to add to the day’s authenticity, said Catch the Spirit co-founder Amy Garza.

Fabric art will be on display Saturday, June 3, during the first-ever Patchwork Fabric Festival, slated for the Jackson County Recreation Center from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Designed as a showcase for handmade fabric crafts, the day’s activities will get under way at 9 a.m. and continue through 5 p.m. Participants will display and sell their wares during the daylong event.

On display will be quilting (hand and machine), weaving, knitting, tatting, crocheting, sewing (clothing and dolls) and works of fabric art, according to Garza.

“Our intent is to present and honor the talents of local and regional artists and crafters, and preserve this important part of our heritage,” Garza said.

Only a few booths remain, Garza said, and those interested in showcasing their fabric creations are asked to call 631-4587 for more information.
