Travis Brotherton wins league meet in 1600 run
Smoky Mountain’s Travis Brotherton won the 1600-meter run at the Western Athletic Conference track meet held May 3 at North Henderson.
His time in the event was 4:36. Brotherton placed fifth in the 800 with a clocking of 2:10. A blister on his foot kept him from running in the 3200.
Travis Clarke again broke his own school record by finishing third in the 300 hurdles in 42.97.
T.J. Bradley placed second in the discus with a throw of 113-4.
Coming in fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-10 was C.J. Fortner.
Chad Harris ran the 100 dash in 12.29 to finish sixth.
The 400 relay team of Bradley, Rodney McCormick, Harris and Stephen Gates was fifth in 48.1.
West Henderson won the meet with 197 points followed by Pisgah (93), Brevard (87), East Henderson (77), North Henderson (65) and SM (33).
“Travis has worked hard all year,” Coach Jamie Extine said. “I felt he had a shot at two events, but he hurt his foot and wasn’t able to run in the 3200. I’m really proud of Tyler. His times keep coming down, and he keeps breaking records.”
Scheduled to compete in Saturday’s Western Regionals at Appalachian State are Brotherton in the 300, Clarke in the 300 hurdles and Fortner in the high jump.
The best finish for the Lady Mustangs was the 3200 relay team, which was second in 15:05. Members included Erica Jones, Caitie Stehling, Emily Cowan and Emily Butcher.
Victoria Palmer was third in the 800 in 2:31 and fourth in the 1600 in 5:55.
Placing sixth were Tina McDonald in the triple jump (29-0) and Karenda Franklin in the 200 (29.93).
The 400 relay team of Jamie Dills, McDonald, Franklin and Ali Taylor was fourth in 58.53.
Also placing fourth was the 800 relay team of Franklin, Dills, Amanda Smith and Nicole Benavides. Their time was 2:09.
“It was a good learning process,” Coach Dale Galloway said. “A majority of our kids are freshmen and sophomores. They got a good understanding that goal-setting is really important. They can gauge where they want to be for next season.”
West also won the women’s meet with 213 points followed by North (188), Pisgah (56), East (44), SM (28) and Brevard (25).
Palmer will compete in the Regionals in the 800 and 1600 with McDonald competing in the long jump and triple jump.
