Traffic stop leads to arrest of fugitive from Florida
By Lynn Hotaling
A Main Street traffic stop Saturday (May 6) led to the arrest later that day of man who is a fugitive from Florida.
Matthew John Taylor, 22, remains in jail under a $10,000 bond. He is under a hold order from officials in Madison County, Fla., according to Capt. Steve Lillard of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Taylor’s arrest came after Sgt. Jon Fox stopped a van in front of the Jackson County Public Library at about 9:30 a.m. for a minor violation, Lillard said. After stopping, the driver, who Fox subsequently discovered was Taylor, fled on foot. Fox attempted to locate Taylor in the vicinity of the old Highlands Cleaners but lost sight of him, Lillard said.
Upon information supplied by the passenger in the car, who authorities believe is Taylor’s girlfriend, Fox later went to an address on Milford Lane off (old) Dillsboro Road and spotted the vehicle. When Fox approached the residence, Taylor again fled on foot, Lillard said. Officers saw Taylor enter a house on Old Dillsboro Road and entered the dwelling and apprehended Taylor, Lillard said.
After Taylor was in custody, officers discovered the an outstanding Florida warrant stemming from a probation violation, Lillard said, adding that Taylor’s Florida conviction was related to grand theft.
Taylor faces charges in Jackson County of breaking and entering in connection with the house he went in while he was attempting to elude pursuers and driving while his license was revoked, Lillard said.
