Tickets now on sale for WCU’s 2006-07 events at Fine, Performing Arts Center
Western Carolina University is ready to raise the curtain on the second season of theater, music and dance in its new Fine and Performing Arts Center, with nine shows hitting the boards as part of the 2006-07 performance series, “Galaxy of Stars: Legends on Stage.”
The variety pack of presentations includes an appearance by Hollywood celebrity Mickey Rooney, a concert by musical stalwarts the Lettermen, the story of bluegrass legends the Stanley Brothers, dance performances by the Atlanta Ballet and Atlantic Ballet of Theatre of Canada, the spectacle of a European circus, and the political satire of the Capitol Steps.
“From our fall opener with Mickey Rooney, a living legend from the golden age of Hollywood, through the spring’s season closer with the wit and wisdom of the Capitol Steps, one of the funniest comedy troupes in the business, we believe that our 2006-07 season truly offers something for everyone,” said Paul Lormand, director of the performance facilities for the Fine and Performing Arts Center.
The Legends on Stage Series will get under way Sunday, Sept. 17, with a 3 p.m. matinee performance of “Let’s Put on a Show,” a collection of songs, reminiscences and jazz by Rooney, who has more than 200 films to his credit during his career. He is recipient of an honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. A five-time Oscar nominee and five-time Emmy nominee, he has won an Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards. Rooney will be joined by his wife, Jan.

Monday, Oct. 16 – “Man of Constant Sorrow,” the story and music of Ralph and Carter Stanley, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 19 – Selections from “The Nutcracker” and other classical works, by the Atlanta Ballet, 3 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 14 – The Lettermen, performing music spanning the 1960s through today, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 1 – “Ol’ Time Religion,” featuring the American Spiritual Ensemble, 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, March 1 – Cirque le Masque, a gravity-defying European stage show, 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 17 – “Out of the Mist: A Dragon & An Ire-ish Tale,” a puppet extravaganza by Wood and Strings Theatre, 3 p.m.
Sunday, April 15 – “Amadeus,” a performance by the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, 3 p.m.
Friday, April 27 – The Capitol Steps, a troupe performing political satire, 7:30 p.m.
Series subscriptions went on sale May 1. Patrons may subscribe to the entire nine-show series for $140. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more, and for children age 5 to 17.
