BRADLEY’S GENERAL STORE has opened a second location on Main Street in Sylva. Bradley’s owner David Gates has moved into the former Bessie May & Co. and installed a soda fountain and stocked the store with T-shirts and souvenir items. The Sylva location, which opened last week, offers ice cream and coffee drinks.
DILLSBORO’S CHARM AND FRIENDLY SHOPS are spotlighted in the May issue of Our State magazine. “The only thing better than Dillsboro’s exceptional shops is the hospitality and good cheer of the people who work in them,” the article says. The five-page story includes several attractive color photos.
LISA AGEE is the new owner of Spring Street Cafe, which is located on Spring Street below City Lights Bookstore. Agee, who took over the restaurant on May 1, moved to Sylva from Richmond, Va. Owning a restaurant has been a longtime dream, said Agee, a former legal assistant who has operated a part-time catering business for about 15 years. She said she plans no immediate changes to the Spring Street menu. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for Sunday brunch. Expanded summer hours will begin after Memorial Day, she said, and Spring Street will be open for lunch beginning May 30.
A-1 PAYROLL SOLUTIONS will host a grand opening celebration Thursday, May 18, from 4 until 6 p.m. The event will include refreshments and door prizes.
JACKSON COUNTY YOUTH SPORTS will hold football and cheerleader registration Saturday, May 13, at Smoky Mountain High School cafeteria from 9 a.m. until noon. Participants must be 6-12 years old and must not turn 13 before Aug. 1. Birth certificate copy and physical required. Cost is $60 for football players and $85 for cheerleaders. THE 22ND ANNUAL DILLSBORO ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL will be Saturday, June 10. This year’s event will feature an expanded offering of arts and crafts. The booths lining downtown Dillsboro will be filled with an array of paintings, woodworking, fine crafts, traditional pottery, Raku pottery, gourd art, handcrafted soaps, stained glass, and many types of jewelry. Headlining the musical offerings is up-and-coming country sensation Matt Stillwell. A Jackson County native and former standout baseball player at Western Carolina, Stillwell will take the stage at 3 p.m. to perform songs off his latest album, “Take It All In.” Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Dillsboro Merchants Association and the Jackson County Arts Council. CATCH THE SPIRIT OF APPALACHIA, along with the Jackson County Parks and Recreation Center and the Appalachian Homestead Farm and Preserve is planning two new festivals to support the local crafts community. Both will be at the Recreation Center in Cullowhee. The first, the Patchwork Fabric Festival, will be Saturday, June 3, and the second, the Appalachian Arts and Crafts Bazaar will be Saturday, Oct. 21. Both have been established to celebrate the heritage of our area, and to honor local talent, said Catch the Spirit co-founder Amy Garza. Traditional dress will be worn at the festivals.
FORMER SYLVA RESIDENT HILDA OLSON was inducted into the Henderson County Education Foundation Hall of Fame on April 27. Olson, who retired after 40 years in education, coordinated elementary education and coordinated federal programs for Hendersonville City Schools. She also served eight years on Hendersonville’s school board. A member of the Sylva High School Class of 1939, she is the daughter of the late Dorrance and Annie Tallent.

THE ST. JUDE’S CHILDREN’S RESEARCH HOSPITAL benefit, which was held April 28, raised more than $1,800 and was a success, according to Dodie Allen. “Words are hard to find to express the apprciation and gratitude to all those who contributed and participated in making this event such a huge success,” Allen wrote.
A YARD SALE WILL BE held beginning at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13, at 5 Woodpecker Lane (off Mockingbird Lane) in Sylva. The sale will include appliances, furniture, clothes and toys.
