SM’s softball team cruises to rain-shortened win over West
Smoky Mountain pounded out 17 hits Friday while rolling to a 10-3 Western Athletic Conference softball victory over West Henderson at Webster.
Rain fell through most of the game, and it was called due to field conditions with West batting in the sixth.
Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit for the Lady Mustangs (10-9, 6-3).
“It was a good day for the bats,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “I’m glad we got the game in.”
West is winless in the WAC so Taylor felt it was important to jump in front of the Lady Falcons early.
“We didn’t do that the first time,” he said. “Once we started hitting, it was contagious.”
Rachel Stewman was three of three with four RBIs. Megan Taylor was three of four while Mallory Nelson, Jamie Hyatt, Jessica Cabe and Chelsea Elders all had two hits.
SM scored in the first as Nelson singled and Taylor had an RBI triple.
West went up 2-1 with single runs in the second and third on RBI singles by Brandy Blackwell and Danielle Dinardio.
The Lady Mustangs took the lead for good at 5-2 with three runs in the third. Nelson singled and Taylor doubled to start the frame. Stewman’s sacrifice fly tied the score. After Hyatt’s single, Cabe doubled in a pair. Cassie Randall capped the rally with an RBI double.
They made it 7-2 in the fourth. Nelson walked and Taylor singled ahead of RBI singles by Stewman and Cabe.
Kirby Barkdoll’s RBI double narrowed the gap to 7-3 in the fifth.
SM answered with there runs in the bottom of the fifth to account for the final. Singles by Elders and Brittany Gilbert put runners on the corners and Gilbert stole second. Both runners scored on a base hit by Taylor, who took second on the throw to the plate. Stewman drove in the last run with a single.
Blackwell had two hits for the Lady Falcons.
Taylor scattered seven hits in going the distance. She walked two and struck out one.
Michelle Dinardio pitched for West.
