SM’s booters post shutout of Pisgah
Smoky Mountain scored goals approximately seven minutes into each half to claim a 2-0 Western Athletic Conference soccer win at Pisgah on May 3.
“As we are going to the state playoffs, we played everyone available in the hopes to gain more experience throughout,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “The team played smart overall and fought an improved Pisgah team that was playing its last game of the season on Senior Night. We recorded another shutout thanks to our defense and goalkeeping. It was a good win for us.”
Kelly Childress scored the game’s first goal in the seventh minute.
“Meagan Green took a throw-in from the 50-yard-line and connected with Malissa Gispert, who flicked the ball with her head into space for Kelly, who went one on one against the keeper before slipping the ball pass the keeper from 7 yards out,” Delor said. “Kelly anticipated the pass and more importantly, kept her composure before striking the ball. Her shot was low, and that’s what we like.”
Green and Gispert were both credited with assists.
Courtney Spaulding made it 2-0 in the 47th minute after taking a throw-in from Chelsea Parham.
“Chelsea took a long throw into the box from the left of the goal and connected with Spaulding, who chest-trapped the ball and shot it into the net from 5 yards out,” the coach said. “Courtney attacked the ball, showed great control and sealed the game for us.”
The Lady Mustangs had a 12-4 advantage in shots. SM’s Amy Haggard made 12 saves while Corrine Mears had seven for the Sugar Bears.
Jenna Carpenter and Colleen Davis were selected players of the game.
