Edith Hoyle
Edith Watson Hoyle, 86, of Old Cullowhee Road, Cullowhee, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 5, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Webb officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Kevin Wike, Kelly Nations, James Algard, Billy Watson, Jack Hoyle, Darrin Ammons and Michael Queen.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a founding member of Unity Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, canning and gardening. She was a daughter of the late Rufus L. and Annie Oxner Watson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, David Glenn Hoyle, who died in 1974; one son, James Hoyle; one brother, Robert Watson; and three grandchildren.
Surviving are one daughter, Eloise Frady of Cullowhee; one son, the Rev. David Hoyle of Cullowhee; one brother, William Watson of Cullowhee; and 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Harry Allman
Harry Eugene Allman, 78, of Webster, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Larry Perry officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, and retired in 1989 from Allison’s Inc., with 34 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, and was a member of Webster Baptist Church. He was a son of the late John H. Allman and Mamie Bumgarner Allman.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, J.H. Allman.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Chester Allman; one daughter, Pam Allman of Chapel Hill; one son, Harry Allman Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Margaret Warren of Canton, Helen Deitz of Sylva and Bess Croci of Las Vegas, Nev.; and two granddaughters.
Dempsy Jones
Dempsy Jones, 73, of Blake Branch, Sylva, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Dennis Burrell, Sherrill Ammons and Jim Cogdill officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy and William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers were Luke Jones, Spencer Jones, Toby Jones, Bruce Jones, Cameron Jones and Tim Jones.
Honorary pallbearer was Mark Jones.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was retired from Allison’s as a certified mechanic. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War, an avid outdoorsman and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a son of Maudie Belle Wikle Jones of Sylva and the late Aude Jones.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 50 years, LaVerne Woods Jones; one son, Rick Jones of Sylva; six brothers, Billy Ray Jones, Harry Lee Jones and Randall Keith Jones, all of Sylva, Kenneth Jones of Atlanta, Ga., Leon Jones of Thomasville and Danny Jones of Asheville; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorials may be made to the family.
William Gillespie
William Thomas Gillespie, 70, of Whittier, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, after a period of declining health.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Johnny Anders
Johnny Vernon Anders Jr., 57, of Crawford Cemetery Road, Sylva, died Sunday, May 7, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Jack Robinson officiating. Burial will be held at a later date.
A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County for the last two years. He was a self-employed mechanic. He was a son of the late John Vernon Sr. and Affie Knight Anders.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbie of Kentucky and Teresa of Indiana; three sons, Chris of Sylva, Robbie of Indiana, and Justin stationed with the U.S. Army in Baghdad, Iraq; two sisters, Carolyn Medford and Jo Ellen Arrington, both of Waynesville; two brothers, Lonny Anders of Union, S.C., his twin, and William Eugene Anders of Waynesville; and 16 grandchildren.
Will Long
Will Sawyer Long, 66, of Big Cove Road, Cherokee, died Friday, May 5, 2006, at Cherokee Indian Hospital after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, at his home with the Rev. James “Bo” Parris officiating. Burial was in Long Family Cemetery.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Swain County. He had been a machine operator for Barclays, and enjoyed woodcarving and gardening. He was a son of the late Allen and Dinah Lossiah Long.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Henry Long.
Surviving are one son, Melvin Long of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Lewis Long of Cherokee; four sisters, Frances Reed, Elista Junaluska and Elnora Nations, all of Cherokee, and Sara Poe of Miami, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Fred Medford
Fred “Bud” Medford, 78, of Dicks Creek Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at his residence after a brief illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, at East Sylva Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy James officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mark Farmer, Scott Crawford, John Garcia, Allen Lindsey, David Turpin, Jon Turpin, Jason Turpin and Drew Farmer.
Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of East Sylva Baptist Church and Tommy Fisher’s Sunday school class.
A native of Haywood County, he had lived in Jackson County since 1978. He enjoyed gardening and listening to bluegrass music. He was a member and deacon of East Sylva Baptist Church. He was a retired warehouse manager and a U.S. Army veteran. He was the son of the late P.L. and Mary Sharpe Medford.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Jo Turpin Medford; one son, Dr. Mark Medford of Seven Lakes; and one sister, Lela Lindsey of Candler.
