Local churches to again sponsor after-prom party
All dressed up and no place to go? Look no further.
For the second year, an after-the-prom party will be held at Western Carolina Univeristy’s Baptist Student Union after Smoky Mountain High School’s May 20 prom.
The event is free and will offer an alcohol-free environment including dancing, food and games. Door prizes will also be given out through drawings held on the half hour throughout the night.
The After-Prom Bash is sponsored by area churches and will be located at the BSU because of its proximity to the prom location. The first “bash,” held last year by Webster Baptist Church, was attended by more than 70 students from Jackson and Swain counties.
“We believe this year’s ‘bash’ will be an even greater success than last year’s since so many other churches have become involved,” said the Rev. David Powell, associate pastor at Webster Baptist. “It is awesome that Christians in Jackson County are willing to work together to provide youth with an opportunity to know joy and also to know Jesus.”
The partnership of churches, known as FUSION, that is cooperating on the after-prom event sponsored a lock-in at Sylva First United Methodist in January that was attended by more than 185 youth.
“Several youth leaders in the area began praying and meeting together last fall,” said Jon Brown, director of Christian education at First Methodist. “I think there has been a real need for churches to come together and set aside our differences and exalt Jesus Christ, the one Lord and Savior of us all, no matter what denomination we are.”
