Lady Knights rally past SM in softball

North Henderson scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally for a 9-4 Western Athletic Conference softball victory over Smoky Mountain on May 2 at North.

“They had some hits that we just couldn’t get to, and we had a few errors,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “It’s never over until it’s over. We haven’t given up many like that this year. It was disappointing, but we didn’t quit. It just didn’t go our way for whatever reason.”

The Lady Mustangs were cruising along with a 4-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth when North used five hits and four errors to take the lead. Megan Bennett singled to drive in the first run, and Brittany Carter capped the uprising with an RBI single putting the Lady Knights up 7-2.

They added two runs in the sixth as Kristy Pace had an RBI triple and also scored.

SM went up 2-0 in the third. Brittany Gilbert tripled, Mallory Nelson walked and a run scored on a wild pitch. Rachel Stewman added an RBI single.

The Lady Mustangs made it 4-0 in the top of the fifth. Megan Taylor doubled to score Gilbert, who had stolen a couple of bases. After Stewman’s single, Jamie Hyatt drove in a run with a base hit.

Stewman and Hyatt both had two hits.

Pace was the winning pitcher.

Taylor pitched into the sixth inning for SM before being relieved by Stewman.
