Blue Ridge baseball team defeats Rosman, Andrews
Blue Ridge upset Rosman and blasted Andrews in non-conference baseball action last week.
The Bobcats (17-4) avenged an earlier 5-0 loss with a 4-3 win at Rosman on May 2. Shane Galloway had tossed a four-hit shutout at Blue Ridge in early April, but this time the Bobcats turned the tables on the tall lefty.
Down 1-0 due to an unearned run, Blue Ridge erupted for four runs in the third to go up 4-1. Gustavo Moreno opened the inning with a bunt single, and Michael Bradley followed with a base hit. Dylan Brooks smashed a one-out triple putting the Bobcats in front 2-1. Nick Miles added an RBI single, stole second and scored on Cody Goodwin’s single to cap the rally.
Blue Ridge’s Dylan Brooks pitched a five-hitter and struck out six in Friday’s 16-1 rout of Andrews.
Goodwin (6-2), who was out-dueled in the previous meeting with Galloway, pitched his best game of the season, according to Coach Jim Nichols. He limited the Tigers to one hit and one earned run in six innings. The Georgia Perimeter signee struck out 11 and walked two.
“Cody showed why he’s one of the best pitchers in Western North Carolina,” Nichols said. “When he is controlling his pitches and has the mental intensity going, he’s mighty good.”
Rosman cut the gap to 4-3 by scoring twice without a hit in the sixth.
Brandon Magruder picked up the save by striking out the side around a single in the seventh.
“This is the kind of game that does nothing but give us tremendous confidence and momentum,” Nichols said. “I really like Coach (Kirk) Dotson, but Rosman has been a real thorn in our side over the years and we simply got over all that with a great win.”
In Friday’s home game, the Bobcats routed Andrews 16-1 behind a 15-hit attack, which included two home runs. Brooks pitched a complete-game five-hitter with the contest being called after four and a half innings due to the 10-run rule.
Magruder and Bradley belted the homers. Eric Farmer was three of four at the plate with two doubles and five RBIs. Goodwin was also three of four with three RBIs. Another highlight was freshman Kyle Johnson getting his first high school hit with an RBI single in the fourth.
Brooks (2-0) has not allowed an earned run in 10 innings of work this season. He struck out six.
“For not getting any time on the mound lately, with no walks I thought he did really well,” Nichols said. “He mixes up his pitches along with terrific location.”
The Bobcats are scheduled to open the state 1-A playoffs at home at 4:30 p.m Tuesday, May 16, against an undetermined wild card opponent.
