Then and now
Sylva-Webster High School, now known as Smoky Mountain High, was almost ready for occupancy in the top photo. The school opened in the fall of 1960 with the consolidation of Sylva High and Webster High. Its name was changed to Smoky Mountain when Sylva-Webster and Cullowhee consolidated in 1988. The main building looked almost the same as it did in 1960 until renovations began a few years ago. The gym is still almost identical with the exception of new windows put in within the last year and a small addition on the side. While work on what was to become the baseball field was a still under way at the time of the early picture, the home side of the football stadium and the original press box had already been built. – Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
