Randall Long
Randall “Mooch” Long, 48, of Cherokee’s Painttown community, died unexpectedly Friday, April 28, 2006.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Phillippi officiating. Burial was in Long Family Cemetery.
Before his health failed, he was a truck driver for Blue Wing Construction. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Wilburn and Pauline George Long.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rick and Duke Long.
Surviving are one daughter, Kelly Long of Cherokee; one son, Errol Long of Cherokee; three sisters, Jessie Maney and Fern Saunooke, both of Cherokee, and Lauren Adams of Sylva; three brothers, David Long, Gus George and George Long, all of Cherokee; and two grandchildren.
Willa Williams
Willa Sue Ammons Williams, 47, of Cullowhee’s Wayehutta community, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus in Asheville after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. David Hoyle officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed gardening and collecting frogs. She was a landscaper with Ben Odom Landscape and had been a supervisor for Emtex. She was a member of Trout Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of Ernest and Bessie Mills Ammons of Cullowhee.
Surviving in addition to her parents are one daughter, Lynn Rhinehart Robinson of Cullowhee; one son, Patrick Eugene Williams of Cullowhee; one brother, Ernest J. Ammons Jr. of Cullowhee; and three grandchildren.

Lois Stokes
Lois Irene Messer Stokes, 73, of Gastonia, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at First Free Will Baptist Church of Gastonia with the Rev. Randy Sawyer officiating. Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Liverett, Danny Liverett, David Liverett, Matthew Clemmer, Jeremy Stroud and Heath Branch.
Honorary pallbearers were Victor Lucas, Todd Bazzle, Kenny Lynn, Lewis Futch and Loren Perin.
She was a native of Swain County and was retired from Rex Mills. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, where she was active in Golden Age Club and Sunday school. She was a daughter of the late Thad and Iva Lee Green Messer.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Roy Coleman Stokes.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Ann Perin of Cramerton, Debra S. Lynn of Belmont, Jo Ann Futch of Lincolnton and Kimberly Christine Stokes of Dallas; three sons, Bryan Glenn Stokes of Gastonia, Christopher D. Stokes of Dallas and Joseph Stanfield of Indian Trail; two brothers, Joe E. Messer of Kings Mountain and William Kelly Messer of Burr, Neb.; and five grandchildren.

Elenora Melton
Elenora Melton, 87, of Lyman, Wash., died Monday, April 10, 2006, at Burton Care Center in Burlington, Wash.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at Bethel Assembly of God in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., with Pastor Rik Morris officiating. Burial was in Lyman Cemetery.
She was born July 31, 1918, in Cowarts and was raised in North Carolina. She worked at her aunt’s boarding house until she met her husband, and the couple moved to Skagit County, Wash., in 1943. She enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and quilting. She was a daughter of the late Homes Parker and Anna Belle Phillips.
She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Merritt Melton, who died in 1998; one brother, Jack Phillips; one sister, Elsie Morgan; three half-brothers; and one half-sister.
Surviving are four daughters, Ruie Franks of Sedro-Woolley, Sharon Garcia and Rhonda Garcia, both of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Mary Melton of Lyman; two sons, Ray Melton of Punkin Center, Wash., and Roger Melton of Eatonville, Wash.; three half-sisters; two half-brothers; 19 grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Elwyn Deitz
Elwyn Queen Deitz, 88, of Sylva, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, after a period of declining health.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Blanton officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a retired school teacher, having taught in Canada and Beta communities. She was a graduate of Asheville Normal School and Teachers College and retired from Scotts Creek School. She enjoyed gardening and working with native plants and shrubs. She was a daughter of the late Andrew B. Queen and Sadie Coward Queen.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, C.D. “Mack” Deitz, who died in 2004; two brothers, Andrew Queen Jr. and Clyde Queen; and one sister, Gracie Garrison.
Surviving are her son, Dan Deitz; two sisters, Dorothy Barnes of Elkins, W.Va., and Mary Frances Brown of Franklin, Tenn.; and one grandson.

Claudine Ensley
Claudine Ensley, 84, of Waynesville, died Friday, April 28, 2006.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, in the chapel of Waynesville First Baptist Church, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Prince officiating. Burial was in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.
She was born June 7, 1921, in Clayton, Ga., and owned Ensley’s Superette with her husband from 1946 to 1981. She worked for almost 10 years at the Open Air Curb Market in Waynesville. She was a daughter of the late “Fate” and Etta Dockins.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Walter “Junior” Ensley; two daughters, Judy Jones of Gastonia and Kay Newman of Maggie Valley; one son, Sonny Ensley of Orlando, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Helen Marie Loftis Jones, 87, of Bryson City’s Schoolhouse Hill community, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at Tsali Care Center.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home with the Revs. Eugene Moore and Marty Pressley officiating. Burial was in Bradley Cemetery.
Pallbearers were her grandsons.
She was a native of Swain County and a daughter of the late Roscoe and Hattie Woody Loftis.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Jones; one daughter, Alice Albrecht; five brothers; two sisters; and two grandchildren.
Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Jenkins of Valdese, Eloise Hurst of Franklin and Evelyn Buchanan of the home; two sons, Bill Wike of Morganton and Ron Wike of Bryson City; three sisters, Gertrude Tippett of Bryson City, Beulah Jones of Whittier and Naomi Parris of Demorest, Ga.; one brother, Ray Loftis of South Carolina; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Lillian Clawson
Lillian Clawson, 78, of Sylva, died Monday, May 1, 2006.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at Laurel Branch Baptist Church with the Revs. Carl Adams, Ricky Connor and Andy White officiating. Burial was in Parris Cemetery.
She was a founding member of Laurel Branch Baptist Church, and enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She was a daughter of the late John Miller and Minnie Winstead.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.L. “Jim” Clawson; one daughter, Joyce Clawson; one son, Leroy Clawson; two brothers; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Surviving are one son, Donald Clawson of Sylva; four daughters, Brenda Clawson, Lois Clawson and Shirley Mace, all of Sylva, and Patricia Tucker of Candler; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
