Then and now
Employees lined up in front of the old Sylva Laundry around 1950 in this photo furnished by former Sylva resident J.D. Patterson of Winston-Salem. Patterson’s father, Floyd Patterson, whose head is between the words “Sylva” and “Laundry,” was manager of the business at that time. Owner Harry Ferguson is on the far right, and the laundry’s bookkeeper, J.T. Gribble, is second from right, said J.D. Patterson, who worked at the laundry in the summers of 1956 and 1957 and remembers that the telephone number there was 25J. LifeWay Community Church (the former Sylva Coal and Lumber Co.) now extends into the space occupied by the former laundry, which was mostly on the Railroad Ave. lot now owned by former Herald Publisher Jim Gray. From the corner of Allen Street, the buildings on Railroad Avenue in 1950 would have included Sylva Coal, Sylva Hotel, Sylva Laundry and the Farmers Federation Warehouse. Visible at left in the recent photo is Sylva’s municipal parking lot. – Photo courtesy of J.D. Patterson (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove |
