Lady Warriors snap SM’s winning streak

Erwin ended Smoky Mountain’s three-game softball winning streak with a 4-1 win Saturday in a non-conference game at Erwin.

“We just didn’t hit the ball,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “We knew what was coming because we had faced the same pitcher before.”

The Lady Mustangs (7-8) scored the game’s first run in the second inning on Jamie Hyatt’s single, a wild pitch and Brandi Anders’ RBI single.

They had a chance to get more in the fourth but left the bases loaded.

Momentum then swung to the Lady Warriors. They tied the score in the bottom of the fourth on Ashley Smith’s double and Brooke Robinson’s RBI single.

Four errors helped Erwin score three times in the fifth to go up 4-1. Courtney Davis’ RBI double was the lone hit of the inning. Smith had a sacrifice fly.

Davis and Robinson were both two of three at the plate.

Robinson pitched and limited SM to four hits.

Anders led the Lady Mustang offense by going two of three.

SM’s Megan Taylor yielded five hits.

Friday’s game with Roberson was rained out and has been tentatively reset for Wednesday.

The Lady Mustangs enter the second half of the Western Athletic Conference season in a five-way tie for first place. They are 3-2 along with Brevard, East Henderson, North Henderson and Pisgah.
