Help shape your county’s future: Vote on Tuesday
This year’s commissioners’ races have generated more than average interest – at least on the part of Democrats – and we hope that excitement is reflected in the number of voters who go to the polls.
The 13 candidates who are seeking the four contested seats – three of which could be decided in Tuesday’s Democrat primary – offer a wide range of ideas and visions for the future of Jackson County. Voters have an obligation to study the issues so they can make an informed choice on Tuesday.
As the newspaper’s letter-writers have proclaimed in recent weeks, our county is at a crossroads, and Tuesday’s outcome will play a significant part in determining which direction we take with regard to land-use planning, growth and development, given that three commissioners’ seats – a majority of the five-member board – could be filled that day,
Decisions that will impact law enforcement and local courts will definitely be decided on Tuesday. With only two candidates each in the races for sheriff and clerk of court, there is no possibility of runoff elections in those important races.
While all elections are important, it can be argued that Tuesday’s is especially so. The future belongs to those who care enough to vote for it.
Celebrate spring in the mountains
Before the serious business of choosing county leaders on Tuesday, we hope people will set aside a little time for some downtown-Sylva-style fun.
The ninth annual Greening Up the Mountains festival will get under way at 10 a.m. – earlier for those physically-fit types who will attempt the annual 5K run that includes jogging up Savannah Drive – with its all-day blend of music, crafts, mountain heritage demonstrations, food and fun.
More vendors than ever before are expected, and the Downtown Sylva Association (former SPIR) and Catch the Spirit of Appalachia have once again worked hard to ensure that there really will be something for everyone to enjoy.
The Sylva Herald photo contest entries – and they are stunning this year – will be on display in the newspaper office’s big windows, and local schoolchildren will show off their talents on the Founders Stage.
We hope to see you there.
