Rubber duckies to again float down river as part of scholarship fund-raiser

Hundreds of rubber ducks – part of a an effort to raise college scholarship money – will be dropped from Dillsboro’s Depot Street Bridge to see which one makes it to the finish line first.

The little yellow duckies, which go for $5 each, raise money to benefit Jackson County New Century Scholars.

This year’s sixth annual “Ducks on the Tuck” launches at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 29, in conjunction with downtown Sylva’s Greening Up the Mountains spring festival. Local fishermen will release the ducks into the Tuckaseigee from the little wooden bridge across the railroad tracks and then catch them as they float down the river toward the finish line at Western Builders.

Malissa Gispert of Smoky Mountain High School shows off this year’s “Ducks on the Tuck” poster, which features her artwork. A design by another SMHS student, Michael Stephens, adorns this year’s “Ducks on the Tuck” T-shirts, which are available at Cullowhee Valley School at a cost of $10 each.

The owner of the winning duck will receive the grand prize, which is a bright yellow 2005 Marshin B-05/MH50 Scooter donated by Riverside Auto Sales of Sylva. The scooter, which gets approximately 110 miles to the gallon, comes complete with helmet. Other prizes include gift certificates to local restaurants, a remote-control boat from Radio Shack, theater tickets, stays at local motels and inns, tickets to Dollywood and gift certificates to local merchants.

Tickets are available at any of the public schools, from Macon Bank, City Lights Bookstore or Southwestern Community College Foundation director Sonja Haynes. Winners do not have to be present to win.
