Police officers to raise money for Special Olympics with ‘Cops on Top’
By Justin Goble
Sylva police officers will continue their fund-raising efforts for Special Olympics North Carolina with this weekend with “Cops on Top,” which will place officers and other participants atop Bojangles..
The event will get underway at 6 a.m. Friday, April 21, and will run until 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 23.
Participants must raise $150 for each hour spent on top of the restaurant before they can come down. Donations will be taken in the parking lot throughout the weekend.
Onlookers will have more to do than watch people sit on the roof, however; numerous activities have been planned to draw spectators. According to organizer and Sylva Police Officer Jeff Postell, Saturday will be the busy day, with numerous events planned.
The schedule for April 22 will include:
11 a.m.: The dunking booth will begin, and run through most of the day. Audience members can pay $5 for three balls.
1 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Cheerleaders from Western Carolina University will wash cars. The time will also be “Mascot Hour,” with the Bojangles chicken, McGruff, Smokey Bear and others on hand for pictures.
4 p.m. – 6 p.m. The “Woman-less Beauty Pageant” will be held.
7 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.: Rock band The Great Imponderables will perform hit songs from the ’50’s through today.
Among the events planned for Sunday is a wing-eating contest, set for 2 to 4 p.m. Contestants can pay $25 to participate, with the winner receiving a free tailgate party from Bojangles.
Postell said other activities were being scheduled, but plans had not been finalized before press time.
With the event, officers are hoping to get closer to their fund-raising goal of $15, 000 for the year. Postell said that after the success of last month’s fire-truck pull, which raised almost $8,000, he is optimistic about “Cops on Top.”
“Our goal is to raise $4,000 for Special Olympics North Carolina,” Postell said. “I’m very confident we will top that.”
