The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Marie Lovedahl

042006marielovedahlMarie Stephens Lovedahl, 93, of Wayne Lovedahl Road, Cullowhee, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Johns Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Jeffery Vickery and Tonya Vickery officiating. Burial was in Lower Coward Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Scott Lovedahl, Roger Lovedahl, Eric Lovedahl, David Lovedahl, Kevin Beck, Robbie Nicholson, Stan Sutton and Ben Lovedahl.

A native and lifelong resident of Caney Fork, she owned and operated Lovedahl Grocery in Caney Fork with her husband from 1953 to 1975. She was a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church Baptist Church, where she was church clerk from 1963 to 1984. She also attended Cullowhee Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late John and Serina Coward Stephens.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Lovedahl, who died in August 1975; six brothers, Spergon, Charles, Sherman, Ruben, Robert and Clarence Stephens; and five sisters, Sue Stephens, Pauline S. Williams, Beulah S. Cope, Maxine S. Coggins and Ronia S. Hooper.

Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Beck of Waynesville, Shirley Nicholson of Sylva and Patsy Lovedahl of Cullowhee; three sons, Keith Lovedahl of Sylva, Joe “Pete” Lovedahl of Cullowhee and Gordon Lovedahl of Albuquerque, N.M.; one sister, Carolyn Fish of Sylva; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Johns Creek Baptist Church Landscape Fund, 3890 Caney Fork Rd., Cullowhee, N.C. 28723.

Arthur Williams

042006arthurwilliamsArthur D. “Art” Williams, 85, of Wesley Chapel, Fla., died Friday, April 14, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Tampa, Fla., after an extended illness.

Services were held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Garden of Memories Funeral Home in Tampa. Burial was in Garden of Memories Cemetery.

He was born in West Virginia and moved to Tampa in 1942 after being assigned to that area during his service with the Merchant Marines. He was the principal owner of Williams Bros. Motors for more than 20 years. In 1981, he started working on real estate developments in Jackson and Swain counties. His 17 developments include LaPorte Acres, River Ridge and Cowee Mountain Properties. He was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge of Tampa for more than 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Dowd Williams; one son, A.D. “Sonny” Williams Jr.; and one brother, T.C. Williams.

Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Anne Egan Williams; one son, Bruce Lloyd Williams of Ridge Manor, Fla.; one brother, Bruce H. Williams of San Antonio, Fla.; two sisters, Vivian Reeves of Tampa and Etta June Williams of Ravenel, S.C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.



Robin Setzer

042006robinsetzerRobin Barnes Setzer, 36, of Whittier’s Conleys Creek community, died Thursday, April 13, 2006.

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at Whittier Church of God, of which she was a member, with the Revs. Ned Pressley, Frankie Rogers, Eddie Stillwell and Marty Pressley officiating. Burial was in Mason Branch Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lewis, Scott, Kevin and Jeff Jones, Brandon Woodard, Mike Cornblum and Travis Quick. Honorary pallbearers were her nephews.

She was a native of Swain County and a graduate of Swain County High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in accounting at Western Carolina University. She was employed with Southwestern Community College in the grants department as an accountant. She enjoyed singing with her family, the Barnes family. She was a daughter of Betty Jones Barnes of Bryson City and the late Nelson Barnes.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sons, Trevor and Brenton Setzer of the home; two sisters, Rhonda Loftis and Rita Fisher, both of Bryson City; two brothers, Ricky Barnes of Sylva and Rodney Barnes of Whittier; and maternal grandmother, Bertie Jones Combs of Bryson City.

Memorials may be made to Swain County Relay for Life, c/o Swain East Elementary School, Whittier, NC 28789.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Jot Smith

Jot A. Smith, 57, of Sylva, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Maxine Martin

Maxine Ethel Martin, 89, of Roswell, Ga., formerly of Cullowhee, died Sunday, April 9, 2006, at her granddaughter’s home in Roswell.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at Catchings Funeral Home in McComb, Miss., with the Rev. Jeff Gardner officiating. Burial was in Pike Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Matthew Martin, Ricky Lewis, Marti Lewis, Tommy Young, Kerry Prine, Albert Johnson and Trent Barron.

Honorary pallbearers were Mark Martin, Keith Chandler, Robert and Kernan Martin, Jack Wynn, and Clark and Greg Sehon.

She was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Minden, La., and was a homemaker, though she held a nursing degree. She lived in West Texas and Farmerville, La., before moving to McComb in 1958. She moved to Cullowhee in 1985, but moved to Roswell when her health began failing. She was a member of McComb Church of Christ, and enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, reading and studying the Bible. She was the second of three children born to the late Grady Austin Martin and Bashie Helen Krouse Martin.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clark Martin; and one son, Dean Martin.

Surviving are one son, Bob Martin of Kenner, La.; two daughters, Anne Sehon of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Rita Lewis of McComb; 18 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Dean Martin Fellowship Business School Scholarship Fund, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC 28723.



Margaret Turner

Margaret A. Turner, 94, of Sylva, formerly of Robbinsville, died Friday, April 14, 2006, at her residence.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, at East Union Presbyterian Church in Cambridge, Ohio, with the Rev. Ronald Fleming officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Cambridge and a daughter of the late Howard and May Mathias Turner.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Buchanan of Sylva; and one granddaughter.

Townson-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.



Harold Wilson

Harold Thomas Wilson, 89, of Sylva, formerly of Franklin, died Monday, April 10, 2006.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Stephens and Tommy James officiating. Burial was in Rush Cemetery with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7339 and American Legion Post 108.

He was a native of Habersham County, Ga., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He owned West Florist for 25 years and was a member of East Sylva Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Thomas J. Wilson and Arrie Wilbanks Wilson.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Moss Wilson, who died in 2004; and one brother, Ervin H. Wilson.

Surviving is one sister, Stella Hardman of Charlotte.

Bernice Lanning

Bernice Robinson Lanning, 84, of Kitty Hawk Road, Whittier, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 16, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Bo Brown and Andy Cloer officiating. Burial was in Robinson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were David Calhoun, David McDonald, Melvin Mathis, Larry Mathis, Tarzan Hood and Justin McDonald.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she enjoyed quilting and canning. She was a member of Dicks Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late John and Isabella Brown Robinson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Lanning, who died in 1980; one son, Lewis James Lanning; and three brothers, Edney, Roy and Fred Robinson.

Surviving are three daughters, Bertha Brown of Whittier, Martha Grooms of Waynesville and Betty Parris of Asheville; one sister, Ellnora Robinson of Whittier; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.



Harriett Francis

Harriett Bryson Dillard Francis, of Waynesville, formerly of Sylva, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, in Marietta, Ga.

Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

Frank Cowan

Frank C. Cowan of Sylva died Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center.

Love Brendle

Love M. Brendle, 96, of Mt. Kisco, N.Y., formerly of Sylva, died Monday, March 20, 2006, after a period of declining health.

Private graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 24, in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Moody Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
