Melton, Carter vie for Clerk of Court position
By Lynn Hotaling
With only two Democrats seeking election as Jackson County’s Clerk of Court, the outcome will be decided with the upcoming primary on Tuesday, May 2.
Contenders are incumbent Ann Melton, who was appointed to the position by Resident Superior Court Judge Marlene Hyatt when longtime Clerk Frank Watson retired in 2004, and Elaine Carter, a former employee in the Clerk’s Office.
Melton is 42, lives in Webster and is currently Jackson County Clerk of Court; Carter is 41, lives on Greens Creek in Savannah community and is a legal assistant with the Sylva law firm of Melrose, Seago and Lay.
Each responded to a question posed by The Sylva Herald. The question and the candidates’ answers follow:
Why do you feel you are most qualified to serve as Clerk of Court?
Melton: With 23 years of experience in the Clerk’s office to rely on, I believe I am the better-qualified candidate. I have been afforded the opportunity to work in all areas of the office, which has given me the knowledge necessary to address the many issues the office faces daily.
My experience creates an invaluable link to the public. It is my priority to provide the public with the information they are seeking and maintain a high level of professionalism. I am a public servant and will continue to be accessible.
I have a strong work ethic and am dedicated to my job. I will work diligently to uphold the integrity of the Clerk’s office while holding my staff to the same standards.
It has been rewarding to serve as Clerk of Superior Court, and I am asking that you vote to keep me as Clerk.
Carter: I feel that with my 12 years of experience in the court systems that I can provide the public with the assistance and understanding of clerk procedures in a kind and most friendly manner.
I feel that I can be impartial and understanding in any situation that may arise. I also feel that I can access the problems and deal with them accordingly. Serving the public in a nice, friendly manner is of the utmost importance.
I will work hard and be dedicated to my responsibilities if elected to be the Clerk of Jackson County. I have served the public for most of my life and would like to continue to do so with your support and vote on May 2.
