Four arrested on drug charges

Four men were arrested in connection with drug-related charges during a traffic stop last week.
The men were apprehended April 14 with significant quantities of controlled substances after Deputy Kenneth Woodring of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office stopped a silver Oldsmobile on Slim Dillard Road for a minor traffic violation.
Woodring became suspicious after noticed the men in the car seemed nervous, said Capt. Steve Lillard.
Woodring asked for and received permission to search the vehicle, Lillard said. During the search, Woodring, who was assisted by Deputy Charles Crisp, located 6.5 grams of marijuana, 2 grams of powder cocaine, 10 grams of crack cocaine and .2 grams of methamphetamine, Lillard said.
Arrested at the scene were Joshua David Byrd, 20, a Western Carolina University student from Hickory; Dennis Walter McQuaig Jr., 27, of Cope Creek Road, Sylva; Demarcus J. Staton, 21, of Laurel Oaks Apartments, Cullowhee; and Timothy Dale Holder, 34, of Cherokee.
Byrd, who was driving the car, faces charges of possession with intent to sell/deliver meth, crack cocaine and powder cocaine. He posted a $10,000 bond and has been released from jail, Lillard said.
McQuaig faces the same charges and remains in jail under a $10,000 bond, Lillard said.
Staton, who faces identical charges, also remains in jail, Lillard said. Staton’s bond was set at $8,000.
Holder, who faces charges of possession of marijuana, possession of crack cocaine and possession of meth, posted a $7,000 bond and has been released, Lillard said.
