Former deputy memorialized
A roadside ceremony was held at noon last Thursday (April 13) on U.S. 23-441 near Cowee Mountain to dedicate that portion of the road as the “Deputy Gene Ashe Highway.” Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe, left, and N.C. Department of Transportation Division Engineer Joel Setzer unveiled the sign as members of Gene Ashe’s family, from left, Nancy Buchanan, Millie Wood and Susan Shannon, watch. “This dedication will serve as a reminder of the commitment that Deputy Gene Ashe had for the citizens of Jackson County,” said Sheriff Ashe. Gene Ashe was 38 when he died of a heart attack following an April 13, 1995, high-speed pursuit that went through three counties. He was found in his car on the side of the highway near Pumpkintown Road. Gene Ashe had served as a deputy for 14 years. |
