THE SYLVA POLICE DEPARTMENT is planning its “Cops on Top” fund-raiser next weekend, April 21-23, at Bojangles. Officers will raise money for Special Olympics North Carolina from the top of the restaurant that weekend. A wing-eating contest and a dunking booth are also being planned. THE COMMUNITY TABLE will hold its first “Empty Bowl” fund-raiser from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday, April 28. The event combines the generosity of community members, local potters and food service providers. Community members will be able to purchase a hand-made ceramic bowl, created by local artists, for $15 from 4 to 8 p.m. Those dishes will then be filled with soup, which will be served with bread and desserts donated by local food service agencies.
DODIE’S AUCTION will hold a “Get Sold on St. Jude Kids” auction at 6 p.m. Friday, April 28. All proceeds from the event will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is the largest childhood cancer research center in the world. It is also the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatments that are not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. Businesses and individuals can donate items to be auctioned by calling Dodie Allen at 586-3634.
JOHN BUBACZ, owner of Cullowhee’s organic food and juice bar The Wha Cha Want Bodega, has opened a wireless Internet coffee shop downtown. Bubacz’s Undergound is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is located between Lulu’s and Guadalupe Café on Main Street. The Mill Street entrance is located at Jane’s Beauty shop at the green awning near Cope’s Superette.
RICHARD WRIGHT OF SYLVA, president of R.L. Wright Construction, has been named Star Building System’s 2005 Master Builder of the Year. Wright received the award at Star’s 2006 national sales meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in February. Wright and his team won the award for construction of the new Prentiss Church of God on Addington Bridge Road in Franklin. The project competed against 122 entries nationwide and was selected the best in the large church category and best of the Tennessee District in Star’s 2005 Master Builder contest, which is designed to recognize outstanding design and construction in the steel building industry. Wright Construction also was honored with Star Building Systems’ Outstanding Builder Award in recognition of its outstanding sales achievements and for its distinguished leadership in the industry in 2005. Founded in 1970, Wright Construction specializes in the construction of institutional, industrial, agricultural and commercial facilities. “Their experience and professionalism has earned them an enviable reputation with their customers who repeatedly select Wright Construction because of its consistent record of preformance,” said John Thomas, Tennessee district manager for Star Buildings.
