Different cars and different seasons are what initially distinguishes this week’s past and present Main Street scenes. A closer inspection reveals the parking meters still present in the top photo, which, along with the make of the cars, means the shot likely dates from the late 1960s. Belk, which opened elsewhere on Main Street in March 1943 and moved to the above location on Labor Day 1953, is still a cornerstone on the west end of town (it closed in 1998), and the Hotel Lloyd is still open for business. In the recent (lower) photo, the old-fashioned street lights that were part of Main Street’s 1998 streetscape makeover are in evidence and are adorned with “Downtown Sylva” banners purchased three years ago by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. Peeble’s, which opened in 1999, has replaced Belk as Sylva’s downtown department store, and the Hotel Lloyd, now owned by Jay Ball, houses the Jewelry Outlet at street level and apartments on its upper floors.– Herald file photo (top) and Herald photo by Nick Breedlove
