Barbara Elders
Barbara Ann Elders, 66, of Knoxville, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, after a battle with cancer.
Services were held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Washington Pike United Methodist Church in Knoxville, of which she was a member.
She was born May 11, 1939, in Cherokee County. She was a former employee of George Reagan Construction Company and later retired from UT Hospital. She enjoyed traveling. She was a daughter of the late Roy Lee and Nettie Ashe Elders.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Jolene Dunn; and three brothers, Verle, Roy and Robert.
Surviving are two brothers, Harold of Whittier and Deland, Fla., and Conrad of Chandler, Ariz.

Wayne Bryson
Wayne Reynolds Bryson, 65, of Glenville, died Friday, April 7, 2006.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Hamburg Baptist Church, of which he was a member, with the Revs. Matthew Ledbetter and Brad Hughes officiating. Burial was in Hamburg Cemetery.
He was a member of the Glenville-Cashiers Rescue Squad for more than 40 years and served as its chaplain. He drove the bus for the gospel quartet “The Revelation” and founded the Christian Youth for Glenville and Cashiers communities. He was a son of the late James Howard Bryson and Bonnie Reynolds Bryson.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Dale Robinson Bryson; one son, Joel Bryson of Glenville; one daughter, Krista Valentine of Glenville; one brother, Larry Bryson of Glenville; and three grandchildren.

John Calhoun
John D. Calhoun, 69, of Cherokee’s Big Cove community, died Saturday, April 8, 2006, at his residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at Straight Fork Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Ray Ball and James “Bo” Parris officiating. Burial was in Calhoun Family Cemetery.
A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Henry Morgan and Amanda Driver Calhoun.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Anna Marie Swayney; and one brother; Robert Lee Calhoun.
Surviving are two sisters, Lucille Cucumber and Stacey Lambert, both of Cherokee.

June Maldonado
June T. Maldonado, 71, of Cherokee, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 9, 2006, at her residence.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Morgan officiating. Burial was in Yellowhill Cemetery.
She worked for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians for 37 years. She was a daughter of the late Timpson and Cindy R. Taylor.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Taylor and Fred Taylor.
Surviving are three brothers, Reuben Taylor, Frank Taylor and Lee Taylor, all of Cherokee; two sisters, Sarah Smythe and Helen Arch, both of Cherokee; two half brothers, Goliath Taylor and Enos Taylor, both of Cherokee; and five half sisters, Louise Goings, Eva Taylor, Ramona Taylor, Faye Junaluska and Katrina Maney, all of Cherokee.

Denver Monteith
Denver Monteith, 76, of Rolling Green Drive, Sylva, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Scotts Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Rich Peoples and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Delos Monteith Jr., Kevin Monteith, Jacob Monteith, Johnny Painter, Doug Painter, Freddie Beasley, Cormal Wike and G.W. Revis.
Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Scotts Creek Baptist Church.
He was a 1948 graduate of Sylva Central High School and a 1952 graduate of Western Carolina Teachers College, where he received a degree in business education. In 1957, he received master’s degrees in school administration and business education from Western Carolina College and George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn. He retired from the Jackson County school system with 40 years of service, having taught one year in Cashiers Elementary School, nine years at Johns Creek Elementary School, 27 years at Cullowhee High School and three years at Smoky Mountain High School.
For many years he was employed as the evening box office manager at “Unto These Hills.” He was a member of Scotts Creek Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school director and deacon for many years. He was a son of the late William “Bill” and Mary Wike Monteith.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Delos Monteith; and one grandson.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Doris Painter Monteith; one daughter, Lisa Monteith of Sylva; and one grandson.

Wade Hall
Wade V. Hall, 80, of Sylva’s Savannah community, died unexpectedly Friday, April 7, 2006.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Clifford Parker and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in Old Savannah Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Bradley, Lewis “Butch” Bradley, Tim Bradley, Roger Hall, Brent Hall and Gary Bishop.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He was a self-employed timber man, and owned and operated heavy equipment. He enjoyed being outdoors, bear hunting and fishing. He was a member of Old Savannah Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Felix and Lula Ashe Hall.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George B. “G.B.” Hall and Richard Ashe; and one sister, Mary Bishop.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Janette Bradley Hall; three sisters, Inez Hurst of Franklin, and Irene Bishop and Vera Cope, both of Sylva; and one brother, Mont Hall of Lyman, Wash.

Ferne Dixon
Ferne Romaine Bowlby Dixon, 92, of Sylva, died Sunday, April 9, 2006.
Private services will be held.
She was born in Brothersvalley Township, Pa., on March 20, 1914. She was a musician. She was a daughter of the late Harmer and Carrie Huager Bowlby.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Royden H. Dixon.
Surviving are three daughters, Gloria D. Dixon, Dr. Greta K.M. Dixon and Kathryne J. Dixon; and two adopted daughters, JoAnn Baker Woodard of Temple Terrace, Fla., and June M. Schneberger of San Antonio, Texas.

Clifford Frizzell
Clifford W. Frizzell, 82, of Bryson City, died Friday, April 7, 2006, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus in Asheville after a brief illness.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 10, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Rev. Earl Holden officiating. Burial was in Stillwell Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lance Frizzell, Mark Laws, Carroll Frizzell, Steven Watts, Hayes Queen and Otis Watts.
Honorary pallbearers were Bill Deitz and Guy Dillard.
A native of Jackson County, he lived in Swain County for the last 51 years. He taught biology and was principal for many years at Swain County High School. He was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II and earned a purple heart and a bronze star, along with several other metals. He was a son of the late W. Don and Selma Lewis Frizzell.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Glenn Frizzell; and one sister, Faye Watts.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Etta Beasley Frizzell; one daughter, Sandra Laws of Bryson City; one son, Ron Frizzell of Sylva; four sisters, Bonnie Deitz and Doris Crowe, both of Sylva, Helen Bradshaw of Westminster, Calif., and Lib Gay of Westerville, Ohio; four brothers, Gene Frizzell of Franklin, Grady Frizzell of Long Beach, Calif., and Darrell Frizzell and Carroll Frizzell, both of Sylva; and five grandchildren.

Helen Hooper
Helen “Honey” Sutton Hooper, 82, of Sylva, died Monday, April 10, 2006.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday, April 13) in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The family was scheduled to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery.
She was a volunteer at the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store and at Harris Regional Hospital. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Women’s Presbyterian Church Association, and a member of Sylva Presbyterian Church. She worked with the Farmers’ Home Administration. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Sutton and Margaret Allison Sutton.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fred D. “Snuffy” Hooper; two brothers, Paul and Bill Sutton; and one sister, Peggy Keever.
Surviving are two sons, Drew Hooper of Sylva and Bremm Hooper of Glenville; and one granddaughter.
Roy Shuler
Roy Shuler, 72, of Cullowhee, died Monday, April 10, 2006, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 14, at Cullowhee Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Samuel W. Hale and Eddie Stillwell officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday, April 13) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Parris Cemetery with military rites conducted by William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.
Pallbearers will be David Shuler, David Cheney, Sam Shuler, Joshua Cheney, Jon Cheney, Richard Frady, Marvin Wilkes and Eddie Lamb.
Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Stacey, Larry Morton, Arden Horstman, Richard Iobst, William Hinkle, Herman Kerr, Sam Beck and members of the Cullowhee Fire Department.
He was born in Dillsboro in 1933, and was a graduate of Sylva Central High School and King’s College. He also attended Carolina Business College and Western Carolina University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean War. He retired as a purchasing agent from WCU in 1993 after 22 years of service. For 18 years he served on WCU’s Mountain Heritage Day Committee, and was honored with the Eva Adcock Memorial Award upon his retirement.
He was a member, elder and trustee of Cullowhee Presbyterian Church, and served two terms on the Board of Trustees of The Presbyterian Home for Children in Black Mountain. He also served on the Board of Directors for United Christian Ministries of Jackson County and was chairman of the Parris Cemetery Committee. He was a member of the Cullowhee Fire Department for 31 years and was elected chief in 1976, an office he held for eight years. Under his leadership a new fire station was built, the department received the first of many grants to purchase new equipment and the annual barbecue was started. He received the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Community Leadership in 1981.
He was a life member of the Jackson County Genealogical Society and served as the group’s vice president for three years. He worked with the county’s 4-H clubs for many years and served as president of the 4-H Leaders’ Association. He was also involved in athletic and band activities at the schools his children attended. He was a son of the late David Daniel and Lora Cochran Shuler.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Betty Tucker; and one infant granddaughter.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Crawford Shuler; two daughters, Kimberly Jean Shuler of Sylva and Lorisa Shuler Cheney of Fayetteville; one son, David Glenn Shuler of Franklin; one sister, Sue Shuler Hooper of Richmond, Ind.; and five grandchildren.

Jerry Beckwith
Gerald Lee “Jerry” Beckwith, 48, of Clyde, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006, after a battle with ALS.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 16, at the Broadway Arts Building in Asheville.
He was born Oct. 4, 1957 in Lansing, Mich. and was raised primarily in Eaton Rapids, Mich. He graduated from Western Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree in business and worked as a computer systems analyst for 10 years. He graduated in 1996 from UNC-Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. He worked for Hospice in Sylva in 1996-97, then at Mission Hospitals in Asheville in oncology for six months before working for Macon County Health Department for the last eight years. He enjoyed kayaking and riding his bike. He competed in and won many triathlons, marathons and other races.
He was preceded in death by one half-sister, Lynn Judge.
Surviving are his wife, Brid; his father and step-mother, Ron and Carol Beckwith of Eaton Rapids; and two sisters, Julie Estabrook-Henrickson, of Belmont, Mich., and Jodie Willard of Santa Barbara, Calif.
