Sylva Herald announces launch of new magazine
By Lynn Hotaling
Jackson County’s oldest newspaper is poised to launch a new publication that will celebrate local history and mountain scenery.
Sylva Herald President Steve Gray announced this week that The Herald’s “Across the Mountains” will debut in late June, just in time for the crowds that flock to Sylva’s Main Street every year for the annual Fourth of July celebration.
The full-color, 8-inch by 11-inch magazine will spotlight all that’s unique about Jackson County, according to Gray.
“We plan a publication that’s devoted exclusively to Jackson County with a primary focus on the Sylva-Cullowhee-Dillsboro areas,” Gray said. “We see a definite need for a magazine that concentrates on this area, and we feel we have the specific knowledge of Jackson County that makes us uniquely situated to create one.”
A primary aim of “Across the Mountains” will be to make visitors aware of all Jackson County has to offer, and its other goal is to remind residents of this county’s storied past, stunning views and cultural heritage, Gray said.
“We envision our inaugural issue as a collector’s item,” he said. “Advertising space will be limited so we’ll have more space to highlight our county’s spectacular mountain vistas and interesting people.”
Because The Herald plans for “Across the Mountains” to be as interesting to county residents as to visitors, copies of the magazine will be included in a late-June edition of the newspaper, with an additional 8,000 or so available for free distribution into the fall, Gray said.
“We’re pleased to be able to offer our readers and advertisers the opportunity to participate in a first-rate, full-color, all-Jackson County magazine,” Gray said. “We wanted to do something extra special to mark The Herald’s 80th anniversary, and we decided to debut this unique publication.”
Jackson County businesses who would like to learn more about “Across the Mountains” or reserve space in the new publication may call The Herald’s advertising department at 586-2611 or inquire by e-mail at ads@thesylvaherald.com.
