SM tops Brevard in WAC softball opener
Megan Taylor pitched a four-hit shutout, and Brittany Gilbert hit a home run leading Smoky Mountain to a 7-0 win at Brevard in the Western Athletic Conference softball opener on March 28.
“It was a good way to start the conference season,” Coach Mark Taylor said. “We want to build on it. Our bats came alive. When you hit the ball, good things happen.”
In addition to her pitching, Taylor was three of four at the plate. Gilbert and Jamie Hyatt were both two of four.

Taylor allowed four walks while striking out seven.
The Lady Devils were unable to take advantage of five errors. They had runners in every innings except the seventh and left 12 on base as Taylor was able to pitch around the miscues.
“When Megan is able to do that, it helps our team,” the coach said. “A couple of those errors were aggressive errors.”
The Lady Mustangs went up 1-0 in the first as Jessica Cabe singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Taylor’s single.
An RBI single by Miriam Brown made it 2-0 in the second.
SM extended the margin to 4-0 in the third as Ashlee Stephens walked and Gilbert hit a home run.
Stephens singled in the sixth, moved up on Brown’s sacrifice and scored on an error making it 5-0.
The final run came in the seventh. Taylor and Hyatt singled around Rachel Stewman’s sacrifice with Taylor coming home on an error.
