SM cruises to soccer win over Highlands

Smoky Mountain had its best offensive showing of the year in a 6-1 non-conference soccer win last Thursday at Highlands.

Kelly Childress and Sarah Newbold both scored two goals and had an assist for the Lady Mustangs (3-6-1).

“We played all of our JVs and our players who don’t start the entire second half,” Coach Stephaen Delor said. “It was a great night for us as we were able to use all 30 of our players. We played well and played smart. Things are starting to click for us.”

Newbold scored the game’s first two goals. She connected from 7 yards out in the seventh minute after taking a long throw-in from Chelsea Parham in the box. Kelly Brannigan provided the assist for the second goal, which came from 10 yards away in the 18th minute.

Newbold had an assist a minute later for Terra Mileti to score making it 3-0.

Childress connected from 3 yards out in the 32nd minute for a 4-0 lead. Megan Mileti had the assist.

The final two goals were penalty kicks by Megan Mileti in the 37th minute and Childress in the 58th minute.

The Lady Highlanders got on the board with a direct kick in the 55th minute.

SM had an 18-5 advantage in shots. Amy Haggard made two saves, and Shandi Young had three.
